What does a remote construction manager do?

A Remote Construction Manager oversees construction projects from a remote location, using digital tools and technology to communicate with on-site teams, monitor progress, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. They coordinate with contractors, clients, and suppliers, resolve issues as they arise, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. This role is ideal for managing multiple projects across different locations without being physically present at each site, thanks to advances in project management software and virtual communication platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote construction manager?

To thrive as a Remote Construction Manager, you need strong project management skills, construction knowledge, and typically a degree in construction management or a related field. Proficiency with construction management software like Procore, MS Project, and remote collaboration tools is essential, along with certifications such as PMP or OSHA safety credentials. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills are crucial for coordinating dispersed teams and stakeholders. These abilities ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to quality standards, even when managed from a distance.

How do remote construction managers effectively oversee projects and maintain communication with on-site teams?

Remote Construction Managers rely heavily on digital tools and regular virtual meetings to monitor project progress and address issues promptly. They utilize project management software, video conferencing, and real-time reporting to stay connected with on-site supervisors and contractors. Establishing clear communication protocols and setting expectations for updates helps ensure alignment across the team. While physical site visits may be less frequent, strong organizational and leadership skills are essential to successfully manage timelines, budgets, and quality from a distance.

About Us
SFV Services is a family of commercial construction and facilities management solutions that provides an all-in-one resource to our retail, franchise, and hospitality clients nationwide. We are a cost-effective partner for every stage of growth by eliminating the need for clients to work with multiple General Contractors, reducing project overhead, cost overruns, and delays.
Since our founding in 2006, we have completed over 1,000 projects with top retail and hospitality companies across the United States, providing them with everything from Site Selection and Evaluation Services, Design and Architectural Plans, all aspects of Construction Management, and aftercare through our Facilities Management.
The Estimator Role
Accurate and comprehensive construction estimates are the foundation of any successful project. They set the baseline for scope, budget, schedule, and risk, guiding decision-making from feasibility through design to completion. A precise estimate helps secure funding, aligns expectations with clients and Ownership, and provides a framework for monitoring performance and controlling costs as the project evolves. Without a solid estimate, projects are prone to scope creep, budget overruns, and missed deadlines.
Responsibilities:
  • Define commercial project scope and understand client requirements
  • Read and interpret building plans and specifications
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and unit cost analysis from drawings, specifications, and schedules
  • Obtain and complete all project bid forms
  • Solicit, obtain, and evaluate sub-contractor proposal for accuracy and completeness
  • Track changes, maintain a living estimate, and manage cost forecasting throughout the project
  • Perform site visits as necessary
  • Interact with clients and design professionals to clarify the exact scope
  • Provide value engineering
  • Assist in the preparation of estimates and documentation for change orders
  • Assist in project scheduling
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, codes, and contractual requirements
  • Maintain accurate pricing structure – Review on a quarterly basis
  • Prepare and submit proposals to the Director of Construction/VP for approval
  • Submit and track estimate statuses with the client(s)
  • Participate in calls with Clients to clarify estimates as needed
  • Reports to Director of Construction/VP

Ideal Candidate Profile
  • 3+ years of Commercial Construction Estimation (Required)
  • Possesses a BA/BS in Construction Management, Business, Operations, or similar (not required)
Location
This is an in-office + site visit role in the Detroit area
Candidates must be based in, or have direct ties to, the Detroit metro.
Compensation:
This role is budgeted at $80K base salary (exempt)
