Remote Construction Controller information

What is a remote construction controller?

A Remote Construction Controller is a financial professional who manages and oversees the accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting for construction projects, typically working offsite or from a remote location. Their responsibilities include monitoring project costs, ensuring compliance with regulations, preparing financial statements, and collaborating with project managers and stakeholders. By working remotely, they utilize cloud-based software and digital communication tools to maintain accurate records and provide timely financial insights. This role is vital for ensuring that construction projects remain on budget and financially accountable, even when the controller is not physically present at the construction site.

What does a remote construction controller do?

Remote Construction Controllers use cloud-based accounting software and project management tools to monitor budgets, track expenses, and process invoices in real time. They collaborate closely with on-site project managers, subcontractors, and finance teams through regular virtual meetings and shared digital documentation. Common challenges include ensuring accurate data collection from field teams and maintaining clear communication despite not being physically present, but strong organizational skills and proactive follow-up help overcome these hurdles. This setup allows controllers to support multiple projects simultaneously and gain exposure to a variety of construction operations, which can lead to advanced roles in project or corporate finance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote construction controller?

To thrive as a Remote Construction Controller, you need strong knowledge of construction accounting, financial management, and project cost controls, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with construction management software (such as Procore or Sage 300 Construction), ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills is essential. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective remote communication are important soft skills for coordinating with project teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and smooth project execution in a virtual work environment.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a QuickBooks Financial Controller based in Netherlands.

This is a fully remote, full-time opportunity for an experienced accounting professional ready to take ownership of a company's financial operations.
You will report directly to the CFO and play a central role in strengthening and professionalizing the finance function.
The position offers significant responsibility across the General Ledger, month-end close, reconciliations, reporting, cash management, and accounting controls.
A key part of the role will be helping transition accounting activities from an external provider to a fully in-house operation.
You will also become the internal QuickBooks expert, configuring and optimizing the platform to support business and reporting needs.
The role combines hands-on accounting with team oversight, operational support, and collaboration with U.S.-based colleagues and clients.
It is an ideal opportunity for an independent, highly detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced, remote environment and values meaningful ownership.

Accountabilities
  • Take full ownership of the General Ledger, ensuring financial records are accurate, complete, and consistently maintained.
  • Configure, optimize, and manage QuickBooks to support accounting structures, reporting requirements, and business processes.
  • Lead or support QuickBooks configuration and implementation initiatives.
  • Drive the transition of accounting and General Ledger activities from an external accounting provider to an in-house function.
  • Manage monthly close activities, including reconciliations, account reviews, and timely closing of the books.
  • Establish and maintain an appropriate Chart of Accounts and consistent accounting classification standards.
  • Prepare and review financial statements and P&L reports across business divisions.
  • Oversee bank reconciliations and monitor cash position and related financial information.
  • Provide accurate and timely financial information to support CFO review and decision-making.
  • Supervise Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable specialists and ensure their work meets established standards.
  • Review and approve invoices, time reports, client statements, payroll, vendor payments, and expense submissions.
  • Coordinate payroll tax, sales tax, and 1099-related accounting matters.
  • Apply accounting policies and procedures established by the CFO accurately and consistently.
  • Maintain strong financial controls and a consistently high level of accuracy.
  • Support accounting-related client requests and assist with operational matters when required in a small-team environment.
Requirements:
  • Proven experience as a Financial Controller, Senior Accountant, or comparable senior accounting professional with full General Ledger ownership.
  • Advanced, hands-on professional experience with QuickBooks is essential; basic familiarity or occasional use is not sufficient.
  • Strong experience with QuickBooks Online and/or QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Demonstrated experience configuring QuickBooks and/or leading or supporting a QuickBooks implementation.
  • Solid knowledge of General Ledger management, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
  • Experience preparing financial statements, P&L reports, and other management-level financial information.
  • Strong understanding of Chart of Accounts structures, accounting classifications, and financial controls.
  • Experience overseeing or working closely with Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a strong track record of maintaining low error rates.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and operate with minimal supervision.
  • Strong ability to execute accounting policies and procedures with precision and consistency.
  • Comfortable taking on operational responsibilities beyond traditional accounting when business needs require it.
  • C1/C2-level English proficiency, both written and spoken, with confidence communicating with U.S.-based colleagues and clients.
  • Availability to work with the required overlap during U.S. business hours.
  • Experience transitioning an accounting function from an external provider to an in-house team is highly valued.
  • Experience with BigTime or similar project accounting software is a plus.
  • Background in professional services, interior design, architecture, construction, or other project-based environments is advantageous.
  • Previous experience supervising accounting or bookkeeping professionals is preferred.
  • As part of the application, candidates should be prepared to submit a short video in English introducing themselves and summarizing their accounting background, followed by a 30-second to 1-minute overview of their professional QuickBooks experience, including versions used, responsibilities, and any configuration or implementation experience.
Benefits:
  • $2,000-$4,000 USD per month, depending on experience and location.
  • Fully remote work arrangement.
  • Full-time contractor opportunity with long-term potential.
  • Direct exposure to the CFO and senior leadership.
  • Significant ownership and autonomy over the accounting function.
  • Opportunity to lead an important transition from outsourced to in-house accounting operations.
  • Opportunity to become the organization's internal QuickBooks expert.
  • A high-impact role combining accounting leadership, process improvement, and operational responsibility.
  • Flexible remote environment with required overlap during U.S. business hours.
  • Short initial trial period designed to ensure a strong mutual fit.
