Job description

Why this role is on the menu

Instacart operates at the intersection of technology and everyday life - and that means real-world legal and safety obligations that can't wait. The Law Enforcement Response (LER) Specialist exists because Trust and Safety needs a dedicated, precise, and trustworthy owner for one of our most sensitive functions: responding to law enforcement inquiries, legal process, and platform safety investigations with accuracy and speed.

The volume and complexity of subpoenas, warrants, and emergency requests reaching Instacart requires someone who can make sound judgment calls under pressure while protecting user privacy and keeping us legally compliant. Twelve months from now, this person will have built a track record of legal response handling, established trust with our Legal team and strengthened the processes that keep Instacart's platform safe for every shopper, customer, and partner. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) and requires working one weekend day.

What you'll cook up in your first year

  • Legally airtight response record: Every valid subpoena, warrant, and court order processed accurately and on time - with clear documentation that holds up to Legal review and protects Instacart from compliance risk.
  • Trusted law enforcement partner: Law enforcement agencies receive timely, policy-compliant responses to data requests.
  • Faster, cleaner investigations: User identification and records pulls for misconduct and safety investigations are completed with precision- reducing cycle time and improving outcomes for Trust and Safety.
  • Cross-functional credibility: Legal and other internal stakeholders rely on you as the go-to expert for LER policy questions, knowing you can communicate nuanced legal and privacy issues clearly in high-stakes situations.
  • Process resilience: Emergencies and real-time safety situations are handled calmly and methodically, with documentation that makes handoffs and future responses even smoother.

The secret ingredients we're looking for

You're someone who takes quiet pride in getting the details right - especially when the stakes are high. You can hold complexity without losing composure, write with precision under pressure, and handle sensitive information the way it deserves to be handled: carefully and confidentially.

Must-have pantry staples (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Familiarity with legal language and the US and/or Canadian criminal justice system, including how subpoenas, warrants, and court orders work in practice
  • Strong written communication skills - able to draft clear, accurate responses to legal process and explain complex policy to both law enforcement and internal stakeholders
  • Ability to stay calm, methodical, and detail-oriented in time-sensitive or emergency situations
  • Comfort handling sensitive, confidential information with a high degree of discretion
  • Working knowledge of Google Drive, Excel, or Google Sheets for collaboration and basic data analysis
  • Genuine interest in law, policy, and privacy - and a desire to build expertise at this intersection

Optional garnishes (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience with applicable privacy laws and regulations (e.g. CCPA, PIPEDA, SCA)
  • Hands-on experience using investigative tools to locate and pull records from limited information
  • Prior legal or privacy operations experience, including drafting or reviewing responses to legal process
  • Basic SQL fluency and comfort with Adobe Acrobat or similar PDF tools
