Remote Computer Hardware Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Computer Hardware Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Hardware Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, computer architecture, and hardware design, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CAD tools (such as Altium Designer or AutoCAD), hardware description languages (like VHDL or Verilog), and version control systems is essential. Strong analytical thinking, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication skills set outstanding engineers apart in remote environments. These abilities ensure efficient hardware development, seamless collaboration with distributed teams, and the successful delivery of high-quality products.

How do Remote Computer Hardware Engineers effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams despite working offsite?

Remote Computer Hardware Engineers often work closely with design, software, and testing teams using collaboration tools like video conferencing, shared repositories, and project management platforms. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation are key to maintaining alignment and ensuring that hardware specifications meet project goals. While physical prototyping may require shipping components or coordinating with on-site staff, most design and troubleshooting tasks can be handled remotely with simulation software and remote desktop access. Building strong communication habits is essential to overcome the challenges of physical distance and keep projects on schedule.

What does a Remote Computer Hardware Engineer do?

A Remote Computer Hardware Engineer designs, develops, tests, and oversees the production and installation of computer hardware components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, and networks, all while working from a remote location. They collaborate with software developers, troubleshoot hardware issues, and ensure that devices function efficiently and reliably. Remote engineers use digital communication and collaboration tools to work with teams and clients, making it possible to contribute to projects without being onsite. Their role is critical in advancing computing technology and supporting the infrastructure behind modern digital systems.

Job description

Description
Exodigo is the leading underground mapping solution for non-intrusive discovery. Our platforms combine multi-sensor fusion, 3D imaging, and AI technologies to create complete, accurate underground maps that enable confident decision-making for customers across the built world. We transform the project lifecycle for our customers, who include key community stakeholders in the utilities, transportation and government sectors.
We are experiencing sky-rocketing growth and closed a historically large $96M Series B round in July of 2025.
Job description
The Lead Utilities Engineer serves as an Engineer of Record for Exodigo's US operations, owning the technical integrity and quality of subsurface utility maps from creation through client delivery. This individual contributor brings deep expertise in US engineering standards, serving as the final technical decision-maker on map accuracy while working closely with Operations, Mapping, Sales, and Client teams. They combine strong engineering judgment with a client-facing mindset, confidently representing Exodigo's work in delivery meetings and staying current with evolving industry trends and standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the engineering decision-maker for subsurface utility map creation dilemmas, ensuring optimal technical outcomes aligned with project and product goals.
  • Represent Exodigo in client-facing settings, participating in meetings to explain and answer questions related to mapping outputs and engineering considerations.
  • Serve as managing agent (or functional equivalent) as Exodigo's engineer of record in holding state engineering firm licenses.
  • Develop deep expertise in the Exodigo tech stack and use that knowledge to inform engineering decisions and trade-offs.
  • Take full ownership of the quality of final deliverables, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to engineering standards.
  • Analyze and design utility systems for large-scale infrastructure projects, ensuring seamless integration with Exodigo's core product.
  • Create and review conceptual utility plans, proposing optimized engineering solutions that minimize project disruption.
  • Ensure compatibility and compliance with CAD formats and deliverables specific to utility engineering.
  • Conduct QA/QC processes across deliverables, focusing on improving accuracy and logical integrity throughout all project phases.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align engineering decisions with advanced mapping and AI-driven technologies.
  • Stay highly up to date with utility engineering standards, conventions, and industry changes, and apply them in daily work.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering
  • Must possess a Professional Engineering (PE) License
  • 7-10 years of experience in SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering), preferably on complex infrastructure projects
  • Strong familiarity with utility engineering standards and best practices, with a commitment to continuous learning in this domain
  • Proficiency in Autodesk and/or Bentley Systems, and GIS, with strong skills in CAD formats and engineering deliverables
  • Ability to deeply understand and work within a technology-driven environment (AI/mapping platforms preferred)
  • Strong analytical thinking and engineering judgment, especially in ambiguous or complex scenarios
  • Experience with QA/QC processes and a strong sense of ownership over deliverable quality
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to engage directly with clients
  • Team player with high attention to detail and a strong sense of responsibility

Salary: $160,000 - $200,000
Location: Remote with preference for candidate to sit on the East Coast
