What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Combustion Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Combustion Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or chemical engineering, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and thermodynamics, usually supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with simulation software such as ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL Multiphysics, or OpenFOAM, as well as experience with programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills help you collaborate with teams and convey complex findings clearly. These competencies are vital for delivering accurate simulations, optimizing combustion processes, and ensuring successful remote project execution.

What are some common challenges faced in a Remote Combustion Simulation role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Remote Combustion Simulation often face challenges such as limited access to experimental data, ensuring simulation accuracy, and effective virtual collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. To address these, it's important to establish robust communication channels, use standardized data formats, and participate in regular team meetings to align on project goals. Additionally, staying updated with the latest simulation software and validation techniques greatly enhances the reliability of results and fosters smoother collaboration with engineers and researchers.

What is remote combustion simulation?

Remote combustion simulation refers to the process of modeling and analyzing combustion systems, such as engines or industrial furnaces, using specialized software tools from a remote location. This allows engineers and scientists to study the behavior of combustion processes, optimize system performance, and troubleshoot issues without being physically present. Remote simulation is especially useful for collaborative teams, reducing the need for travel and enabling safer, more efficient experimentation.

What is the difference between Remote Combustion Simulation vs Remote Thermal Analysis Engineer?

AspectRemote Combustion SimulationRemote Thermal Analysis Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, CFD or combustion modeling certificationsEngineering degree, thermal analysis certifications
Work EnvironmentSoftware-focused, often remote, in R&D or engineering teamsSoftware and laboratory work, often remote or on-site in R&D
Industry UsageEnergy, aerospace, automotive industriesEnergy, manufacturing, aerospace industries

Remote Combustion Simulation and Remote Thermal Analysis Engineer roles share similar credentials and industry applications. However, combustion simulation focuses specifically on modeling combustion processes, while thermal analysis covers broader heat transfer and thermal performance assessments. Both roles are essential in optimizing energy systems and often involve remote work in R&D settings.

Job description

United States - Remote
Simulation & Modeling Engineering Lead
Full-Time, Permanent
This is a remote position in any state or province where Graymont operates
Graymont is seeking a Simulation & Modeling Engineering Lead to oversee the creation, validation, implementation, and support of process models and tools in industrial settings. This role bridges engineering and IT to optimize manufacturing, improve efficiency, support the deployment of decarbonization, and enable the integration of complex engineering systems. Reporting to Director Decarbonization Engineering, the successful individual will develop, validate, and support process simulation and optimization tools that support plant engineering design, optimization, and operation but also the execution of pre-commercial decarbonization feasibility projects.
The Simulation & Modeling Engineering Lead will collaborate closely with Process Engineering, HSE, and Plant Operation and Maintenance teams, gaining a solid understanding of Graymont's core business operations.
Responsibilities
Process simulation and modeling tools Development, Validation & Technical Support
  • Manage all aspects of the platform(s), methodologies, and projects execution associated with simulation and modeling tools development within Graymont. Design, communicate, and implement the project plans associated with simulation tools development for Graymont's engineering simulator.
  • Monitor progress and performance of simulation tools against the simulation development targets.
  • Conduct heat and mass balances and develop advanced test campaigns and instrument selection for modeling tools validation.
  • Collaborate with plant personnel, contractors, and technical teams to implement innovative modeling solutions.
  • With Engineering Support, document and communicate critical process modeling capabilities and best practices.

Project & Innovation Support
  • Conduct process simulation and optimization for Graymont's new and existing technologies. Participate in the execution of process and decarbonization engineering projects (feasibility studies, conceptual designs, process optimization, etc.)
  • Support equipment selection, layout design, piloting, validation, and commissioning activities with simulation tools.
  • Run simulations to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve process issues in lime, limestone, and LCCS manufacturing, and decarbonization of the same.

Leadership, communication & influence
  • Identify, develop, and gather the resources (including external consultants) to complete the development, deployment, and support of the simulation and modeling tool suite
  • Provide leadership and technical assistance to the simulator development team to solve advanced simulation challenges
  • Define project roles and goals to be achieved, in collaboration with internal customers and stakeholders.
  • Regularly interact with internal and external stakeholders to manage the project charter for the simulation tools development at Graymont. In collaboration with Plant O&M, EHS, process engineering, decarbonization engineering, and OT/Controls teams, leads in-depth analysis and conceptual thinking on how to provide simulation tools that meet stakeholders' requirements. Can handle vague and complex simulation requirements and break them down into manageable, value-added modeling tools
  • Secures the confidentiality and consistent utilization of the tools developed, in collaboration with Engineering Support and documentation teams
  • Facilitate cultural and technical change aligned with the simulation tools deployment initiatives.

Safety, Environmental & Regulatory Compliance
  • Champion safety as a core value across all functions.
  • Work with plant and HSE teams to ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulations.
  • Understand combustion practices and emissions limits and other regulatory requirements.
