What is remote coding?

Remote coding refers to the practice of writing, testing, and maintaining computer code from a location outside of a traditional office, typically from home or another remote environment. This job allows software developers, engineers, or programmers to collaborate on projects using online tools and communication platforms. Remote coding offers flexibility in work location and often in working hours, making it a popular option for those seeking better work-life balance. Employers benefit from access to a wider talent pool, while employees can avoid long commutes and work in a comfortable setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote coder?

To thrive as a Remote Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical coding guidelines, healthcare documentation, and relevant coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, often supported by certification like CPC or CCS. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding software, and compliance tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective communication skills help remote coders manage workloads and collaborate virtually. These competencies ensure coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, and efficient remote workflow in healthcare organizations.

What are some common challenges remote coders face, and how can they overcome them?

Remote coders often encounter challenges such as communication gaps with team members, managing time across different time zones, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. To address these, it's important to actively participate in regular virtual meetings, use collaboration tools like Slack or Jira, and establish a dedicated workspace to minimize distractions. Additionally, setting clear boundaries for work hours and proactively seeking feedback can help remote coders stay connected and productive within their teams.

Engineering Manager

Futurex

Bulverde, TX โ€ข Remote

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Posted 21 days ago

Job description

Futurex is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team of software/firmware engineers building world-class HSM and Key Management products. You'll be the direct people manager for your team - responsible for their day-to-day performance, growth, and delivery. This is a hands-on leadership role: you'll balance people management with enough technical fluency to unblock your team and speak credibly to engineering tradeoffs.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the direct manager for a team of software engineers - own 1:1s, performance reviews, PTO/attendance, and career development
  • Ensure day-to-day accountability: your team shows up, communicates blockers early, and delivers on commitments
  • Own sprint/project planning in partnership with product and program management; keep timelines realistic and on track
  • Identify and resolve delivery risks before they become missed deadlines
  • Partner with senior engineers on technical direction without necessarily writing production code yourself
  • Hire, onboard, and ramp new engineers on the team
  • Escalate resourcing, scope, or cross-team dependency issues to leadership proactively
  • Foster a culture of ownership, quality, and accountability

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years managing software or firmware engineers, ideally in a regulated, security-sensitive, or hardware-adjacent industry
  • Strong track record of hitting delivery timelines and managing performance/accountability issues directly and fairly
  • Comfortable reading technical work (code reviews, architecture docs) even if not actively coding
  • Excellent communication skills - comfortable delivering hard feedback and escalating risk early
  • Experience with agile/scrum delivery methodologies
  • Prior engineering background (CS degree or equivalent experience) preferred but not required if management track record is strong
  • Experience managing distributed/remote engineering teams
  • Background in cryptography, PKI, HSMs, or payments/security industries
  • Experience with performance improvement plans and difficult personnel conversations

Benefits

  • Health, dental, vision, life, and short/long-term disability insurance
  • Paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave
  • Competitive compensation and opportunities for advancement
  • Retirement plan with employer contribution match
  • Welcoming, family-style corporate culture uniquely suited to fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and motivated individuals
  • One of San Antonio's "Best Places to Work" for nine consecutive years
