What is a remote Cobol developer?

A Remote Cobol Developer is a software programmer who specializes in COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) and works from a location outside of a traditional office setting, often from home. COBOL is a legacy programming language commonly used in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments. Remote Cobol Developers maintain, update, and troubleshoot COBOL-based applications, frequently collaborating with teams online. Their work often involves supporting or modernizing critical systems that have been in operation for decades. This role requires strong problem-solving skills and familiarity with mainframe environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Cobol developer?

To thrive as a Remote Cobol Developer, you need a solid understanding of COBOL programming, mainframe systems, and experience with legacy application maintenance, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like IBM z/OS, JCL, DB2, and version control systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, self-management, and effective communication skills help you stand out in a remote environment. These competencies ensure reliable modernization and maintenance of critical business applications while facilitating collaboration across distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Cobol developers when working with legacy systems?

Remote COBOL developers often encounter challenges such as limited or outdated documentation, complex legacy codebases, and integration with newer technologies. Effective communication with on-site teams is essential to clarify requirements and resolve issues, especially when institutional knowledge is not well-documented. Additionally, accessing mainframe environments securely from remote locations may require specialized tools and coordination with IT departments. Overcoming these challenges usually involves proactive collaboration, utilizing version control systems, and staying current with both COBOL and relevant modernization tools.

What is the difference between Remote Cobol Developer vs Remote Mainframe Developer?

AspectRemote Cobol DeveloperRemote Mainframe Developer

Both roles are prevalent in financial and government sectors, with similar remote work options.

Is there a demand for remote Cobol developers?

Remote Cobol developers are in demand primarily for maintaining legacy systems in industries like finance and government. Many organizations seek experienced developers with knowledge of mainframe environments, often requiring skills in COBOL, JCL, and related tools, with remote work options increasing for specialized roles.

Job description

At CanadaHelps we believe in the power of generosity - not just for those who receive it, but for everyone it touches. Every act of generosity sparks connection, inspires change, and brings people together. This is an opportunity to join something bigger: a movement that fuels progress, strengthens communities, and reminds us of what's possible when we come together.

We are a dedicated team of entrepreneurial-minded peers who believe in a world where everyone can thrive. We offer a flexible, inclusive environment built on growth, ambition, and shared success.

CanadaHelps provides the most comprehensive and flexible range of giving solutions for donating to any charity in Canada, and we partner with charities of all sizes to ensure they have the tools they need to achieve their goals.

About the role:

We are looking for a full-time Software Developer III. The ideal candidate will own complex features and technical workstreams end to end from refinement and design through implementation, testing, release and production support across our C#/.NET backend and React front end.

This is a senior individual contributor role. You'll lead feature-level technical design, work through ambiguity without waiting to be unblocked, and make thoughtful trade-offs between delivering now and maintaining system health over time. You'll also make the developers around you better through code review, mentorship, knowledge sharing, and the quality of the technical thinking you bring to the team.

You'll work closely with your Technical Lead, Product, QA and DevOps, and bring curiosity about the bigger picture; not just what we're building and how, but why it matters to donors, charities and CanadaHelps.

The annual salary range for this role is$110,000 - $120,000. Where an offer falls within this range is determined through the interview process. Candidates are benchmarked by the hiring team based on role scope, relevant experience, skill alignment, and expected impact, using consistent and objective criteria.

This position is remote but may require to be in-office in Toronto for team collaborations. This is anexisting vacancy.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include but are not limited:

Deliver

  • Own complex features from design through production support, turning partially defined problems into clear, actionable technical work.
  • Write clean, maintainable, secure and well-tested code across front-end and back-end systems.
  • Surface risks, dependencies and blockers early; ideally during refinement and estimation, not once delivery is underway.
  • Investigate production issues independently and drive durable fixes rather than temporary patches.

Design

  • Lead feature-level design across APIs, data models and integrations, evaluating trade-offs and recommending pragmatic solutions.
  • Partner with the Technical Lead and Architecture when decisions have broader cross-system or architectural implications.
  • Apply and advocate for strong engineering practices across security, testing, observability, performance and documentation.
  • Look for opportunities to simplify solutions, automate recurring work and improve the developer experience.
  • Design and build accessible, semantic front-end experiences, considering SEO, usability and web standards as part of implementation, not as an afterthought.

Multiply and Amplify

  • Give code reviews that engage with correctness, maintainability, security and design; not just style.
  • Mentor other developers toward greater confidence and independence.
  • Share knowledge through documentation, pairing and technical discussion so useful context does not stay siloed.
  • Actively participate in broader knowledge-sharing efforts across teams by leading technical demos, workshops, or presentations.
  • Help good engineering practices spread beyond your own work by influencing how the team approaches recurring technical problems.
  • Improve how the team works, not just what it ships.

Required Skills and Experience:

Must Have

  • Substantial experience delivering and supporting complex production software; roughly 6+ years, although we care more about what you've shipped than the number.
  • Strong C# and .NET experience, including building and maintaining RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Working proficiency with React and TypeScript/JavaScript.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as SQL Server.
  • A track record of independently troubleshooting production issues and leading technical design decisions.
  • Strong technical judgment and the ability to work effectively through ambiguity.

Nice to Have

  • Azure or comparable cloud experience.
  • Experience with automated testing and modern CI/CD practices.
  • Experience in payments, fintech or another security-sensitive domain.
  • Experience mentoring developers or helping establish a strong code-review culture.

We believe in everyone

At CanadaHelps, we commit to pursuing deliberate efforts to ensure that our company is a place where differences are welcomed, different perspectives are respectfully heard and where every individual feels a sense of belonging and inclusion. We know that by creating a vibrant climate of inclusiveness, we can more effectively advance our collective capabilities.

CanadaHelps does not use AI-enabled tools to screen, assess, rank, or select candidates in our recruitment process. Our hiring teams make all hiring decisions.
