Debit Card Processing Specialist (Mainframe / Assembler)

Apex Systems is a global IT services provider and our staffing practice has an opening for a Debit Card Processing Specialist to place at our client, a top Canadian Bank under the Personal & Business Banking portfolio.

Terms: 6-month Contract-to-Hire (strong preference to convert the right candidate).

Location: Hybrid 2+ days a week Downtown Toronto

 

Overview


We’re hiring a Debit Card Processing Specialist to support and enhance a complex debit card processing ecosystem. This role is ideal for an intermediate-level engineer/analyst with strong payments/network knowledge and hands-on mainframe (Assembler) development experience. The focus is on understanding and supporting end-to-end debit transaction flows and contributing to technical analysis and development work in a production-minded environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical analysis and support for the debit card processing ecosystem, including end-to-end transaction flows.
  • Working with Interac and Mastercard/VISA network processing
  • Trace, troubleshoot, and explain debit transaction and network flows across systems and rails.
  • Perform hands-on mainframe development (Assembler) and related system analysis activities.
  • Support production-oriented investigation and problem-solving efforts (triage/root cause focus).
  • Work independently on priority assignments while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

 

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in technology roles supporting payments or debit systems.
  • Strong, practical knowledge of debit card processing and how transactions flow through networks/rails.

·        Experience with Interac and Mastercard/VISA network processing

  • Experience with network flows and familiarity with ISO messaging/metrics.
  • Hands-on mainframe experience, including Assembler development.
  • Proven ability to work in/around production environments with strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and organization skills.
  • Ability to ramp quickly, be proactive, and take ownership of problems end-to-end.

 

Preferred / Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with Connex (highly valued).
  • Exposure to TSYS (especially if able to discuss end-to-end transaction processing, not only account-level views).
  • Broader payments ecosystem knowledge (e.g., familiarity with major debit/credit network concepts).

 

Engagement Type

  • Contract-to-hire (strong preference to convert the right candidate).

 

 

Must-Haves (Non-Negotiables)

  • Debit card processing domain expertise
    • Strong understanding of how debit card processing works, including transaction flows and network/payment rails.
  • Network experience specific to debit processing
    • Understanding of network flows and how transactions move across the ecosystem.
    • Familiarity with ISO messaging/metrics (as referenced in notes).
  • Hands-on mainframe development experience
    • Assembler coding experience (hands-on).
  • Development background is required
    • Not looking for a pure QA or pure BA profile.
  • Production experience/exposure
    • Has supported or worked in/around production environments and understands operational realities.
  • Experience level
    • Targeting ~7+ years overall (intermediate “high L6 / L7” type profile).
