Job description

Forensic Civil/Structural Engineer | Detroit, MI

We are looking for a driven professional to join our Detroit team, where you will investigate complex structural and construction-related failures for insurance, legal, and industrial clients.

About the Role

In this position, you will assess and determine the cause and origin of structural failures, building envelope damage, and construction defects — while also evaluating the extent and repairability of such issues. You will manage multiple projects simultaneously, deliver expert written and oral reports, and provide testimony in litigation matters when needed.

What You'll Do

  • Investigate and analyze residential, commercial, and industrial properties to resolve claims and legal matters
  • Conduct field investigations to determine the cause and origin of structural failures, construction defects, and building envelope damage
  • Gather photographic evidence, conduct interviews, oversee field testing, and review construction drawings and historical documentation
  • Prepare detailed reports outlining causes of failure, extent of loss, repair scope, and remediation recommendations
  • Provide expert opinions and testimony in litigation matters
  • Manage multiple projects, coordinating with other experts to deliver timely client reports
  • Build and maintain strong, mutually beneficial client relationships

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering
  • PE license required (4th-year EIT with the ability to obtain PE licensure quickly will be considered)
  • 5+ years of experience in civil/structural engineering
  • Project management and/or field investigation experience preferred
  • NCEES record preferred
  • Strong verbal, written, and analytical communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computer-assisted engineering/design software
  • Ability to read and interpret technical reports, legal documents, and financial records
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally and regionally

Compensation & Benefits

We offer a competitive salary along with a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, Dental & Vision coverage
  • 401(k) and IRA Retirement Plan
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Holidays)
  • Maternity & Paternity Leave
  • Short & Long-Term Disability
  • Training & Development opportunities
  • Work from Home flexibility

Travel: This role involves up to 50% local and regional travel, with minimal overnight travel (less than 5%).

Take the next step in your engineering career. If you are passionate about forensic investigations and making a difference in complex claims and legal matters, we want to hear from you. Apply today!
