What is a remote children's book designer?

A Remote Children's Book Designer is a professional who specializes in creating the visual layout, illustrations, and overall design of children's books while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They collaborate with authors, publishers, and illustrators to ensure that the book's visuals are engaging, age-appropriate, and support the story. Their work often involves using digital design tools to format text, choose colors, and integrate artwork into pages, all while adhering to publishing standards. Working remotely allows them to communicate with clients and team members online, offering flexibility and access to a wider range of projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote children's book designer?

To thrive as a Remote Children's Book Designer, you need a strong background in graphic design, illustration, and familiarity with children's literature, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and experience with digital publishing platforms are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills that set top designers apart in remote environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating engaging, age-appropriate visuals and collaborating seamlessly with authors, editors, and publishers from a distance.

How do remote children's book designers typically collaborate with authors and illustrators during the design process?

Remote Children's Book Designers work closely with authors and illustrators by leveraging digital communication tools such as email, video calls, and collaborative platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox. Regular check-ins, feedback rounds, and shared mood boards help ensure that the visual style aligns with the story and the publisher's guidelines. Flexibility and clear communication are key, as designers often need to manage differences in time zones and creative perspectives. This collaborative process not only enhances the final product but also builds strong professional relationships across distances.

APA Publishing Intern

About the Office

The APA Publishing is a major division of the American Psychological Association. One of the primary objectives when psychologists established APA in 1892 was the exchange of scientific information. Its annual meeting was the first component of knowledge dissemination; later, in 1927, the association added journals, an abstract periodical, then books, and finally databases.

The book program, which began in the mid-1950’s with the publication of occasional books, now publishes an average of 75 books each year. Perhaps the most widely known is the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association®, now in its sixth edition.

APA Books®, the largest imprint, has more than 900 books in print that are selected to meet the needs of APA's diverse membership of scholars, clinicians, researchers, and students. Included in this imprint is a growing list of reference titles such as the APA Dictionary of Psychology (and its abridged and collegiate derivatives), and a distinguished series of multi-volume handbooks investigating core areas in psychology.

The APA Psychotherapy Video Series includes a substantial number of training videos. The APA LifeTools® imprint specializes in self-help books designed to make psychological science available to the mass market.

Magination Press ®, APA’s children’s book imprint, publishes storybooks, workbooks and educational books to help children and the adults in their lives deal with a wide variety of challenges and concerns.

Requirements

The responsibilities and expectations of interns are to:

  • Support the programs and projects of the APA Publishing, focusing on books
  • Assist with tasks for APA’s publishing marketing team
  • Attend department meetings
  • Write marketing copy and press releases
  • Conduct research for various projects
  • Data entry
  • Other projects as assigned.

 Professional Advancement

Through hands-on experience, you will have the opportunity to develop:

  • Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills
  • Better understanding of the publishing industry and how it works
  • Event planning and marketing expertise
  • Connections with peers and professionals both in the field of psychology and in book publishing
  • A greater understanding of your career goals and how you can attain them

Job Location - Remote: APA internships may be considered for remote work eligibility as defined in APA’s Flexible Work Policy and are subject to approval. Remote work interns may not work from the following states or U.S. territories: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, U.S. Virgin Islands, Washington, Wyoming.
