KENTECH Consulting Inc. is hiring experienced California-based Background Investigators to support pre-employment background investigations for public safety, security, and sworn personnel. This is a project-based, case-driven role with work assigned based on availability, experience, and case needs.
What You’ll Work On
Assignments may include investigations for:
  •  Sworn personnel (POST-compliant cases) 
  •  Public safety dispatchers 
  •  Security management and supervisory roles 
  •  Security officers (fast track cases) 
  •  Follow-up or discovery work tied to disqualifying or unforeseen findings 
Key Responsibilities
This role is fully remote and may include:
  •  Conducting candidate interviews remotely (video/phone) as needed 
  •  Conducting reference interviews remotely
  •  Completing employment, education, and other verification steps as assigned 
  •  Reviewing records and documenting findings clearly and objectively 
  •  Conducting social media and open-source research in compliance with applicable laws 
  •  Writing accurate, timely investigation summaries and reports aligned with POST standards and program requirements 
  •  Coordinating with internal project management and quality review teams to support final report submission 
  •  Maintaining secure handling of sensitive information and following documentation standards 
Compensation

  •  Paid per completed investigation, not hourly, unless specifically approved in advance for a task. 
  •  POST-compliant investigations: up to $645 per case
Requirements

  • POST Background Investigator certification (required for sworn cases) 
  •  Minimum five (5) years conducting pre-employment background investigations for law enforcement or public safety agencies 
  •  Strong knowledge of POST standards and Government Code 1031 and 1029
  •  Strong written communication and disciplined documentation practices 
  •  Comfortable working independently, managing multiple cases, and meeting deadlines 
  •  Comfortable working in a remote, case-driven environment 
  •  Strong attention to detail and ability to produce consistent, defensible documentation 
Work Location

  •  Remote (California-based) 
Independent Contractor Relationship (1099)
This is a 1099 independent contractor role. Investigators:
  •  Are paid per case or approved task-based work 
  •  May accept or decline assignments based on availability 
  •  Set their own schedules within case deadlines 
  •  May provide services to other clients
