Job description

Position Summary

This position is responsible for geologic evaluations to support world-class exploration, development and operations of geothermal resources globally. An individual in this role will work in a world-class collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment and will be considered as a high-level contributor and specialist.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures a safe work place and takes responsibility for safety with the goal of zero incidents
  • Utilizes technical authority for discipline within company processes as-required requiring consistently high levels of accuracy and relevance of work of both self as well as others within the team
  • Performs a variety of tasks independently and/or within a team environment without need for supervision. Drives outcomes from self and team that both meaningfully and materially impact the company.
  • Acts in a dependable manner and uses sound judgement in all activities.
  • Prepares technical insights in a suitable communication method such as reports and presentations with accurate use of company tools, templates and standards, creating high-impacts to company
  • Manages data and information in a manner that is consistent with company systems and processes
  • Works independently on Projects and leads activities to achieve timely, measurable and relevant outcomes for the company
  • Conducts training internally or externally and acts as a coach or mentor to others
  • Successfully leads multi-disciplinary teams for work activities in addition to other periodic requirements such as due-diligence or joint ventures and can act as a primary contact person
  • Demonstrates leadership in creating new projects and company opportunities
  • Actively works to innovate and improve company tools, systems and processes and ensures clear understanding of external best-practices
  • Construct quality conceptual models of geothermal systems through thorough analysis and interpretation of relevant datasets including but not limited to: geochemistry, surface geology, subsurface geology, well data, drilling data, remote sensing, and geophysics.
  • Perform geologic mapping and create maps with a focus on structure, alteration, mineralization, geomorphology, and rock-type distribution.
  • Model subsurface well targets including planning directional wells. Collaborate with drilling engineers, project managers, and drilling operations to plan and execute drilling programs.
  • Responsible for multiple individual prospect developments from preliminary prospect analysis to reservoir testing. Utilizes basic project management skills to move prospects through phases of development.
  • Strategizes on exploration and development to maximize value according to company goals. Make clear recommendations considering risk, uncertainty, and upside potential.
  • Maintain an exploration mindset including the ability to work multiple hypotheses, generate new prospects or concepts, define risk and uncertainty, and evaluate prospect potential consistently.
  • Data mining and management for all information related to geoscience, wells and prospects.
  • Responsible for multiple operating geothermal reservoirs through ownership of the conceptual model. Work with operations, reservoir engineering, geochemistry and other departments to maximize value in compliance with company values.
  • Accountable for conceptual model and geoscience inputs to permit packages and business initiatives.
  • Collaborate with company stakeholders on drilling or exploration projects including Operations, Business Development, Transmission, Compliance, and others.
  • Collects geochemistry samples for exploration projects as-required

  • Actively handles work or assignments as-required that are outside ones normal work routine
  • Represents company at industry or stakeholder forums professionally as-required
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by management

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • Must possess Master of Science or Engineering in a relevant subject. A Doctorate degree in a relevant subject is advantageous.
  • Must have a minimum of 10 years' experience in the industry or related fields, generally with 10 - 40 years of experience, with experience across the full value chain of geothermal (exploration, development and operations)
  • Must have field mapping and structural geology experience.
  • Experience in geophysical and geochemical surveys and analysis is advantageous.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of key components of all associated and relevant disciplines
  • Experience in Project Management is preferred. Experience under the PMI project management framework is preferred, ideally holding either CAPM or PMP qualification
  • Must be able to use and acquire knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation. Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, Power Point and use of the Internet.
  • Proficiency in technical specialist applications including, but not limited to, ArcGIS, ENVI, Global Mapper, Leapfrog and Surfer
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English at a level which will permit the employee to accurately understand and communicate information to safely and efficiently perform the job duties. Proficiency in other languages is advantageous, especially in Spanish and Bahasa (Indonesia).
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work activities so time is used efficiently and effectively
  • Must demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness to ensure quality performance
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving record acceptable to Ormat's auto insurance carrier

Physical Requirements

  • The ability to work in an office environment and to work at a computer, and computer monitor, and use repetitive motion for long periods of time
  • The ability to work in a power plant and wellfield near hot pipes, drilling rigs and heavy equipment
  • The ability to navigate and work in remote field locations and work outdoors in difficult weather conditions
  • The ability to walk, hike, and work on steep, rough terrain for extended periods of time
  • The ability to safely operate 4WD light vehicles on highways and off-road safely
  • The ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment
  • The ability to periodically lift up to 25 lbs
  • The ability to travel up to 30% of the time, including internationally
