The Sigur Center for Asian Studies is a university research institute and the academic home of the Asian Studies Program of the Elliott School. Its mission is to increase the quality and broaden the scope of scholarly research and publication on Asia, promote US-Asian scholarly interaction and educate a new generation of students, scholars, analysts, and policymakers. The Sigur Center promotes research and policy analysis on East Asia, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia through an active program of publishing, teaching, public events, and policy engagement. The Center offers students the largest Asian Studies program in the Washington, DC metropolitan region, with around 68 faculty members working on Asia.
Position Specific Summary
The Research Assistant (RA) will work on a number of research projects that require comparative analysis; contribution to a foreign policy book project under the guidance of a faculty member. The RA will be responsible for conducting research on government archives in Mandarin Chinese, assisting with literature reviews, and preparing research materials. Opportunity includes co-authorship of conference paper as well as book project.
  • Research Tasks: Conduct research in government archives and other relevant sources in Mandarin Chinese. Collect and analyze data pertinent to the foreign policy book project.
  • Administrative Support: Assist with administrative tasks such as organizing and preparing research documents, data entry, and document management.
  • Preparation of Materials: Draft summaries, create graphs and fi gures, and prepare documents for articles, reports, and presentations.
  • Special Projects:Support any special projects or additional duties asneeded by the department or faculty member.

Standard Position Description
The student will perform basic administrative and research tasks under the guidance of a faculty member or research coordinator. Tasks may include: assisting with experiments, coding, data entry, and data cleaning, preparing research/documents for articles, reports, and/or presentations. Students may also help provide information for literature reviews, draft summaries, and create graphs and figures. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental/faculty needs.
