Remote Backlog information

How do Remote Backlog team members typically collaborate with other departments to manage project priorities effectively?

Remote Backlog professionals frequently coordinate with cross-functional teams, such as development, product management, and quality assurance, using online collaboration tools. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and transparent communication channels are essential to keep everyone aligned on shifting priorities and deadlines. Effective collaboration also involves gathering feedback, refining tasks, and ensuring that backlog items are well-defined for smooth handoffs between remote teams. This environment requires strong organizational skills and proactive communication to overcome challenges such as time zone differences and varying workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backlog Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backlog Manager, you need strong organizational skills, experience in agile methodologies, and a background in project management or business analysis. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana, and certifications such as Certified Scrum Master (CSM) are commonly required. Excellent communication, prioritization, and stakeholder management skills help you coordinate tasks and ensure alignment across teams. These skills are important to efficiently manage project priorities, ensure timely delivery, and support effective team collaboration in remote or distributed environments.

These professionals track progress, prioritize tasks, and help ensure that work is completed efficiently, often using project management tools and collaborating with distributed teams. The backlog can include customer requests, product features, technical issues, or support tickets, depending on the organization. This role is common in software development, customer support, and project management environments. Remote Backlog specialists play a key role in keeping teams organized and ensuring that important work is addressed in a timely manner.

Job description

Are you interested in joining a purpose-driven company in the music industry? Do you thrive in a collaborative work environment?ย  If you do, we would like to get to know you.ย

WHO IS THE MLC?ย

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) is a nonprofit organization designated by the U.S. Copyright Office to administer blanket mechanical licenses for digital music services in the United States. We sit at the intersection of music, finance, and technology-processing billions of music usage records, matching recordings to rights holders, and helping ensure songwriters, publishers, and copyright owners are paid accurately and transparently for the use of their music. Membership with the MLC is free for songwriters and music publishers, allowing creators to register their works and receive royalties they have earned. Behind the scenes, our teams leverage data, analytics, software engineering, and operational expertise to solve complex challenges within the modern music ecosystem and support the people who create the music we all enjoy.

WORKING AT THE MLCย

The MLC is committed to excellence, service, transparency, and diversity. Our culture is collaborative; our people are adaptable. On our team, you are respected, valued for your unique strengths and experiences, and empowered to identify and resolve your own challenges.ย

THE ROLEย

As a Technical Product Owner, you will help translate product vision and operational needs into clearly defined, executable work for the Matching Platform. Working as part of the Matching Tech Team, you will help structure and decompose complex workflows and technical systems into well-defined requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, and development tasks that enable efficient execution across the team.ย

You will contribute to shaping user-facing workflows, dashboards, andย operationsย by understanding the systems, data, and business processes, while collaborating with stakeholders and end users to ensure solutions are practical, scalable, and aligned withย Theย MLC'sย goals. You willย maintainย a high-quality development backlog, supportย prioritizationย and sprint planning activities, and help ensure the team has the clarity and structureย requiredย to deliver effectively. The Matching Platform is a critical tool that enables The MLC to driveย accurateย royalty payments to ourย Members.

This is a fully remote role. This role requires candidates to be located within the Central or Eastern Time Zones, as the position works closely with cross-functional teams and stakeholders during standard East Coast business hours.

QUALIFICATIONSย

  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in a Technical Product Owner, Product Analyst, Systems Analyst, Product Operations, or similar role within a software engineering environment.ย
  • Strong experience translating complex operational or technical requirements into well-defined user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, and development tasks.ย
  • Proven experienceย with Jira, including backlog management and story decomposition.ย
  • Experience working closely with engineering teams on technical systems, APIs, workflows, and data-driven platforms.ย
  • Proficient in SQL and comfortable working with technical systems, data models, and structured datasets.ย
  • Experience creating workflows, diagrams, wireframes, dashboards, or other user-facing operational artifacts.ย
  • Strong organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability toย facilitateย discussions between technical and non-technical audiences.ย
  • Experience working in Agile environments andย participatingย in sprint planning, refinement, andย deliveryย coordination activities.ย
  • Experience in music publishing, music rights, metadata systems, orย theย musicย industry in generalย is a plus.ย

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIESย

AS A TECHNICAL PRODUCT OWNER YOUย WILL:ย

  • Own andย maintainย a high-quality backlog for the Matchingย Techย Team, ensuring work is clearly defined, properly prioritized, and ready for development.ย
  • Translate product discussions, operational needs, and technical concepts into user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, diagrams, and development tasks.ย
  • Break down complex initiatives into executable units of work,ย identifyingย dependencies, sequencing, and implementation considerations.ย
  • Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, production issue triage, and other Agile delivery activities.ย
  • Develop initial proposals for dashboards, workflows, operational tooling, and user-facing experiences for collaborative refinement with stakeholders and engineers.ย
  • Work closely with operations users and stakeholders to gather feedback,ย validateย workflows, and improve operational processes within the Matching Platform.ย
  • Participate in productionย issueย triage and support investigation efforts using SQL, system knowledge, and operational context.ย
  • Help communicate delivery progress, technical concepts, and operational impacts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.ย

AS A MEMBER OFย THEย TECHNOLOGYย TEAM, YOU WILL:ย

  • Work collaboratively within an Agile environment,ย participatingย actively in team ceremonies, planning activities, and cross-functional discussions.ย
  • Foster clear communication and shared understanding between technical teams, operational users, and stakeholders.ย
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of product, operational, and delivery processes across the Technology organization.ย
  • Promote structured, well-defined, and scalable approaches to workflow design, backlog management, and technical execution.ย
  • Support a collaborative, data-driven, and continuousย improvementย culture within the Technology team.ย
