Position Overview
The Drupal Software Engineer will be a developer working across the Drupal portals, with particular focus on the UI and backend features supporting the Applicant Portal and Reviewer Portal. The person will also contribute across the broader SAP ecosystem. The primary responsibility is to build, enhance, and maintain the Applicant Portal and Reviewer Portal, while also contributing to adjacent Drupal-based systems and the broader SAP ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Frontend Responsibilities
โ€ข Build and maintain the Applicant Portal, Reviewer Portal, Metadata Manager Portal, and Administrator Portal front end components
โ€ข Implement a user centered UI aligned with NSF's design standards and consistent with USWDS patterns where used
โ€ข Ensure complete Section 508 compliance including keyboard navigation, semantic structure, ARIA patterns, and screen reader compatibility
โ€ข Implement role-based access control in the UI so users see only the data and actions appropriate for their role
โ€ข Work closely with UX, product, and NSF teams to implement wireframes and requirements accurately
Backend Responsibilities
โ€ข Build and maintain Drupal backend logic including custom modules, hooks, forms, and custom Form API implementations
โ€ข Implement workflows for application intake, review processes, scoring, metadata validations, and program configuration
โ€ข Build and maintain RESTful APIs and integration points
โ€ข Support metadata ingestion pipelines and validation rules
โ€ข Implement user and role management consistent with RBAC requirements
โ€ข Collaborate with database engineers on data modeling, queries, and performance tuning
โ€ข Contribute to monitoring, logging, and error handling to support production stability
General Software Engineering Responsibilities
โ€ข Perform end to end analysis, design, and development
โ€ข Code, debug, test, and troubleshoot during the full development lifecycle
โ€ข Conduct and participate in peer code reviews
โ€ข Participate in UI and UX discussions and provide engineering input
โ€ข Mentor and support junior engineers as needed
Qualifications
Education and Experience
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent years of experience
โ€ข At least 5 years of professional engineering experience
Technical Skills Required
โ€ข Experience with Sass for CSS preprocessing and Twig for templating
โ€ข Demonstrated experience with Drupal development, including Drupal 10 module development, Drupal 10 Form APIs, custom forms, templates, theming, hooks, and custom workflows
โ€ข Experience building complex, accessible web applications
โ€ข Experience implementing Section 508 and WCAG accessibility
โ€ข Experience with role-based access control in both frontend and backend contexts
โ€ข Strong backend experience with APIs, workflow logic, and metadata driven systems
โ€ข Strong relational database skills
โ€ข Familiarity with cloud or hybrid hosting environments
โ€ข Experience with CI and CD pipelines, Docker, and modern DevOps practices is a plus
