Remote Backend Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Backend Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Backend Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of database management and software architecture. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), version control systems (like Git), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required, and certifications in cloud computing or backend frameworks can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear written communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies enable efficient development, seamless teamwork, and the effective building and maintenance of scalable backend systems in a distributed work environment.

What are some common challenges Remote Backend Engineers face when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Backend Engineers often work with colleagues across different time zones and cultures, which can make real-time communication and quick problem-solving more challenging. They may need to rely heavily on written documentation, asynchronous communication tools, and clear code reviews to ensure everyone stays aligned. Proactively reaching out, maintaining regular updates, and participating in virtual standups or sprint meetings are key strategies to overcome these challenges and foster effective teamwork.

What are Remote Backend Engineers?

Remote Backend Engineers are software developers who specialize in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of web applications, while working from a location outside of a traditional office environment. They focus on ensuring that the application's data and processes function smoothly, securely, and efficiently. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams using digital tools to manage projects, communicate, and deploy code. This role requires strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and the discipline to work independently.

What is the difference between Remote Backend Engineer vs Remote Software Developer?

AspectRemote Backend EngineerRemote Software Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field, often with backend-specific certificationsBachelor's in CS or related field, with general programming certifications
Work EnvironmentFocus on server-side, database, and API developmentDevelops applications across front-end and back-end, often full-stack
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, SaaS providersTech, finance, healthcare, and various industries
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for specialized backend rolesSeeking broader software development roles

The main difference is that a Remote Backend Engineer specializes in server-side development, APIs, and databases, while a Remote Software Developer may work across both front-end and back-end tasks. Backend Engineers focus more on infrastructure and data management, whereas Software Developers have a broader scope in application development.

Job description

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Backend Engineer in Netherlands.

Join a fast-growing engineering team building the backend systems behind a leading Customer Experience Intelligence platform used by global brands. In this role, you will design and scale distributed backend services and APIs that power high-impact analytics products. You will work at the intersection of backend engineering and applied AI, integrating LLMs and intelligent frameworks into production systems. The environment is highly collaborative, product-driven, and focused on solving complex data and infrastructure challenges at scale. You will take ownership of end-to-end delivery, from architecture to production operations, in a high-availability, cloud-native environment. This is a unique opportunity to shape core platform capabilities while working closely with product and engineering leaders in a fast-evolving AI space.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that support a high-throughput analytics platform.
  • Architect and evolve distributed systems with a strong focus on reliability, maintainability, and performance at scale.
  • Own full lifecycle delivery of backend initiatives, including technical design, implementation, testing, observability, and production support.
  • Integrate AI capabilities such as LLMs, agentic frameworks, and related pipelines into core backend services and product features.
  • Improve system reliability through robust observability practices, including logging, tracing, monitoring, and incident response.
  • Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering stakeholders to define requirements, shape architecture, and deliver technical solutions.
  • Contribute to engineering excellence through code reviews, design discussions, and continuous improvement of backend standards and practices.
  • Work with cloud infrastructure environments such as GCP or AWS to support scalable, production-grade systems.
Requirements:
  • Strong experience as a Senior Backend Engineer in high-ownership, product-driven engineering teams.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern backend language such as Python, Go, or Ruby, with strong architectural and system design skills.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, RESTful APIs, event-driven architectures, and scalable backend design principles.
  • Experience optimizing database performance at scale, including indexing, query tuning, and working with large production datasets.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as GCP (preferred) or AWS.
  • Strong knowledge of observability practices, including monitoring, logging, tracing, and incident management in production systems.
  • Proven ability to independently deliver complex backend features in fast-paced engineering environments.
  • Bonus: experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, or agentic AI frameworks (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, MCP).
  • Bonus: familiarity with analytical databases (e.g., BigQuery, ClickHouse), search systems (e.g., Elasticsearch), or event-driven tooling (e.g., Kafka, Pub/Sub).
  • Bonus: experience with AI-assisted development tools and workflows such as Cursor, Copilot, or Claude Code.
  • Bonus: exposure to NLP, customer feedback analytics, or open-source contributions/public speaking.
Benefits:
  • Flexible, choice-driven remote working environment.
  • Work-from-home allowance to support your ideal setup.
  • 25 days of annual leave plus local bank holidays.
  • Additional day off on your birthday.
  • Annual learning and development budget to support continuous growth.
  • Equity options to share in company success.
  • Monthly health and wellbeing budget, increasing with tenure.
  • Optional private healthcare plan.
  • Life assurance and income protection (depending on location).
  • Enhanced family leave and additional support benefits (where applicable).
  • Inclusive, collaborative engineering culture focused on learning, trust, and ownership.
