Remote Backend Engineer information

What is a remote backend engineer?

Remote Backend Engineers are software developers who specialize in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of web applications, while working from a location outside of a traditional office environment. They focus on ensuring that the application's data and processes function smoothly, securely, and efficiently. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams using digital tools to manage projects, communicate, and deploy code. This role requires strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and the discipline to work independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote backend engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Backend Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of database management and software architecture. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), version control systems (like Git), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required, and certifications in cloud computing or backend frameworks can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear written communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies enable efficient development, seamless teamwork, and the effective building and maintenance of scalable backend systems in a distributed work environment.

What are some common challenges remote backend engineers face when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Backend Engineers often work with colleagues across different time zones and cultures, which can make real-time communication and quick problem-solving more challenging. They may need to rely heavily on written documentation, asynchronous communication tools, and clear code reviews to ensure everyone stays aligned. Proactively reaching out, maintaining regular updates, and participating in virtual standups or sprint meetings are key strategies to overcome these challenges and foster effective teamwork.

What is the difference between Remote Backend Engineer vs Remote Software Developer?

AspectRemote Backend EngineerRemote Software Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field, often with backend-specific certificationsBachelor's in CS or related field, with general programming certifications
Work EnvironmentFocus on server-side, database, and API developmentDevelops applications across front-end and back-end, often full-stack
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, SaaS providersTech, finance, healthcare, and various industries
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for specialized backend rolesSeeking broader software development roles

The main difference is that a Remote Backend Engineer specializes in server-side development, APIs, and databases, while a Remote Software Developer may work across both front-end and back-end tasks. Backend Engineers focus more on infrastructure and data management, whereas Software Developers have a broader scope in application development.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Back-End Engineer (Python) based in Netherlands.

As a Back-End Engineer, you will join a cross-functional engineering squad building and scaling a modern SaaS platform designed for global workforce management. You will focus on developing secure, reliable, and easy-to-use APIs and integrations that power critical product experiences. Working alongside Product, Design, Front-End, Back-End, and QA specialists, you will contribute throughout the full software delivery lifecycle. The environment is remote-first and highly collaborative, with teams distributed across Europe and Asia and a strong emphasis on asynchronous communication. You will have increasing ownership over technical solutions while participating in architecture and engineering discussions. AI-assisted development is an integral part of the engineering workflow, giving you the opportunity to use modern coding tools while developing strong judgment around generated code. This is a strong opportunity for a Python engineer who wants to grow technically while working in a high-ownership, international environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Develop, document, and maintain fast, secure, reliable, and easy-to-use APIs consumed by front-end and back-end applications.
  • Design and implement integrations with third-party applications and external software systems.
  • Participate in the full implementation lifecycle, from technical design and development through testing, deployment, and rollout.
  • Use AI-powered coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot as part of the development workflow while reviewing, validating, and improving generated code.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and fellow Engineers to plan, design, and implement new product features.
  • Contribute to technical discussions, architecture decisions, and solution design within the engineering organization.
  • Participate in the Back-End Engineering Chapter and share knowledge, practices, and technical insights with peers.
  • Design and document technical solutions before implementation, ensuring that architectural decisions are clear and maintainable.
  • Contribute to a strong engineering culture focused on quality, security, performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Take increasing ownership of technical work and actively contribute to the successful delivery of squad objectives.
Requirements:
  • At least 3 years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and experience with a Python web framework, preferably FastAPI.
  • Practical experience designing and implementing microservices.
  • Solid understanding of API design, including REST, gRPC, and GraphQL, as well as API documentation using OpenAPI/Swagger.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with common database and data-storage technologies.
  • Ability to design, communicate, and document technical solutions before beginning implementation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in distributed and remote environments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across time zones using asynchronous communication.
  • Familiarity with AI coding assistants and willingness to develop a disciplined workflow around AI-assisted development.
  • Understanding of Test-Driven Development and a strong instinct for writing effective automated tests, particularly when reviewing AI-generated code.
  • Experience working on SaaS platforms or custom-built software products is a plus.
  • Knowledge of online payments, payroll, invoicing, or other related business domains is advantageous.
  • Some experience with Java and Spring Boot is beneficial.
  • Understanding of application security and performance concepts.
  • Self-directed and curious approach, with strong ownership, proactive communication, willingness to seek feedback, and commitment to continuous growth.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary.
  • Remote-first working environment across Europe.
  • Asynchronous way of working designed to support distributed teams and flexible collaboration.
  • Ability to work from abroad for short periods.
  • Opportunities for professional development and career growth.
  • Necessary hardware provided to new joiners from day one.
  • Opportunity to work within a cross-functional, international engineering team.
  • Exposure to modern AI-assisted software development tools and workflows.
  • High-ownership environment where engineers are encouraged to contribute to technical decisions and develop their expertise.
  • Opportunity to work on a large-scale SaaS platform serving globally distributed businesses.
