Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer information

What are Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain autonomous systems—such as drones, robots, or vehicles—while working remotely. They use advanced software, sensors, and algorithms to ensure these systems can operate independently and safely. Their work involves tasks like programming control systems, integrating hardware components, and troubleshooting issues from a remote location. These engineers often collaborate with teams virtually and leverage cloud-based tools to monitor and update autonomous systems deployed in various environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration, as they work with multidisciplinary teams across different locations and time zones. Managing system integration and troubleshooting without on-site access can also pose difficulties, requiring strong documentation and remote diagnostic tools. Staying updated on rapidly evolving technologies in autonomy further demands ongoing learning. To address these challenges, engineers should leverage clear communication channels, utilize collaborative platforms, and participate in continuous training opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, control systems, programming (such as Python or C++), and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with simulation tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB, and familiarity with machine learning or AI frameworks are typically required, along with certifications in automation or robotics being advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for designing, troubleshooting, and improving autonomous systems while collaborating efficiently within distributed teams.

Job description

Who we are

With its A.I.-powered robotic technology platform, Symbotic is changing the way consumer goods move through the supply chain. Intelligent software orchestrates advanced robots in a high-density, end-to-end system - reinventing warehouse automation for increased efficiency, speed and flexibility.

What we need

We are looking for an Advanced Electrical Engineer to join our ICS Electrical Hardware team within our Engineering organization. Your job will be to support the design, manufacturing, installation, and continuous improvement of industrial control solutions across Symbotic systems. This role will contribute to new product development, support existing product configurations, and help deliver scalable, high-performing automation systems for customer sites.

What we do

The ICS Electrical Hardware Team is part of the Engineering organization which is responsible for designing and delivering advanced automation and warehouse control solutions that power Symbotic's autonomous systems. The team supports electrical hardware development, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and ongoing production support while contributing to the design and deployment of new Symbotic products.

What you'll do

  • Work with the existing electrical team on new product development designs, existing product configurations, and obsolescence issues.

  • Create and manage Bill of Materials (BOMs) and Engineering Change Management within Symbotic's PLM system.

  • Supervise junior engineers, drafters, and technicians to support the design, documentation, testing, and release of projects.

  • Support production by investigating fabrication failures, technical issues, and field failures.

  • Research and evaluate electro-mechanical components including cables, connectors, and sensors.

  • Define protocols, write test plans, and conduct testing required to validate the safety and effectiveness of designs.

  • Travel to customer sites to support new installations and system deployment activities.

What you'll need

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or closely related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum of 5 years of Electrical Engineering experience in Industrial Control Systems, with Rockwell product experience preferred.

  • Strong skills using AutoCAD and/or EPlan CAD software.

  • Knowledge of industry standards including NFPA 70 (NEC), UL 508A, NFPA 79, ANSI/NECA 1, and ISO 12100.

  • Experience with Bill of Material creation and Engineering Change Management processes.

  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, AS-i, and EtherCAT.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

Our environment

  • Up to 30% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

  • The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
