Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer information

What are Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain autonomous systems—such as drones, robots, or vehicles—while working remotely. They use advanced software, sensors, and algorithms to ensure these systems can operate independently and safely. Their work involves tasks like programming control systems, integrating hardware components, and troubleshooting issues from a remote location. These engineers often collaborate with teams virtually and leverage cloud-based tools to monitor and update autonomous systems deployed in various environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration, as they work with multidisciplinary teams across different locations and time zones. Managing system integration and troubleshooting without on-site access can also pose difficulties, requiring strong documentation and remote diagnostic tools. Staying updated on rapidly evolving technologies in autonomy further demands ongoing learning. To address these challenges, engineers should leverage clear communication channels, utilize collaborative platforms, and participate in continuous training opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, control systems, programming (such as Python or C++), and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with simulation tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB, and familiarity with machine learning or AI frameworks are typically required, along with certifications in automation or robotics being advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for designing, troubleshooting, and improving autonomous systems while collaborating efficiently within distributed teams.

The RoleWe are looking for talented, energetic, and outgoing application engineers to work in a rapidly growing field where you will have the opportunity to deliver state-of-the-art Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) to some of the most exciting electric utilities around the world. You will be involved in designing, building, configuring, testing, and delivering these systems all while working closely with other driven Engineers and with our customers. Specifically, you'll be working on the Outage Management System (OMS) that spans the electric utility's operational and information technology domains; you will be building systems that improve the efficiency of the utility's grid operations and capture information and data in support of their business functions. These systems will expand the utility's Smart Grid capabilities by providing detailed insight into the operations of the electrical grid. You will have the opportunity to shape the future of the electrical grid, which will reduce environmental impacts through the conservation of crucial resources. You will be reporting to the Outage Management System (OMS) Manager.Your Impact

  • Work closely with customers to understand their operational needs, provide system training, and configuration to meet their needs.
  • Perform system and acceptance testing with customers.
  • Develop scripts and other middleware solutions to integrate into third-party systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex problems and collaborate with technical experts in various domains.
  • Lead workshops with customers.
  • Travel to customer sites and work directly with customers to successfully deliver, test, and integrate systems.
What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in applications engineering, software engineering, or computer engineering or a related field.
  • 4+ years of application engineering work experience.
  • Experience working in or with utilities or in an engineering support role especially in the OMS or ADMS space
  • Ability to travel up to 20%.

  • Basic understanding of remote system access.
  • Comfortable working with configuration files and navigating servers.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to identify software defects.
  • Ability to distinguish between configuration issues and development bugs and submit highly detailed defects to the development team.
  • Attention to detail: ability to accurately update and sync configuration across a large number of servers.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve technical issues without step-by-step guidance.
  • Ability to translate complex technical problems into clear, customer-friendly explanations.
  • Capable of identifying root causes and communicating solutions without overwhelming the customer and/or leadership with unnecessary technical detail.
