Job Summary

The Strategic Relations and Communications Department at CU Boulder invites applications for a Web Operations (WebOps) & Automation Engineer! This position works within a cross-functional team to empower campus departments with a robust, modern web platform. Instead of managing raw hardware, you will focus on Developer Experience (DevEx)-using tools like Drush, Composer and CI/CD pipelines to automate the lifecycle of hundreds of sites. This is a perfect role for someone who enjoys "infrastructure as code" and wants to help bridge the gap between development and stable production environments.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Development:

  • Build, maintain, and improve website orchestration toolset.
  • Build, maintain, and improve infrastructure orchestration toolset.
  • Automate testing, QA, CI/CD pipelines, and other tasks
  • Respond to the needs of users and other developers.

Operations:

  • Design, build, maintain and improve aspects of infrastructure through reusable code, configuration and tooling.
  • Work collaboratively with the development team to implement performance monitoring, logging and observability solutions.
  • Participate in on-call rotation.

Reliability:

  • Work collaboratively with the development team to implement and improve the performance and capacity of the platform.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to application deployment, maintenance, and operations.

  • This is a fully remote work opportunity.
  • This is a 2-year limited-term position with the possibility of extension beyond the limited term, depending on departmental budgets.
  • This position participates in a shared on-call rotation. Since we use managed cloud hosting, on-call events are rare and typically focus on high-level application availability rather than hardware or data center maintenance. We prioritize a healthy work-life balance and offer the stability and benefits unique to a University environment.
What We Can Offer

The annual salary range for this limited-term, full-time position is $74,400-$90,000.

What We Require
  • 1+ years of experience in a DevOps, WebOps, or System Administration role.
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in a related field. A combination of education and related experience may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Familiarity with Git and a desire to automate manual tasks.
What You Will Need
  • Scripting: Proficiency in Python, PHP, or Bash for automating workflows.
  • Web Stack: Experience with Drupal or WordPress and an understanding of how the LAMP/LEMP stack functions in a cloud environment.
  • The Terminal: Comfort working in a Linux/Unix command-line environment (Lando, DDEV, or similar local dev environments).
  • Problem Solving: A "systems-thinking" approach-when a problem happens twice, you want to write a script so it never happens a third time.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Experience with managed hosting platforms (specifically Pantheon).
  • Knowledge of GitHub Actions or automated testing suites like Playwright.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native concepts (even if you aren't managing the clusters yourself).
