What is a Remote Audio Description Writer?

A Remote Audio Description Writer is a professional who creates verbal descriptions of visual content for people who are blind or have low vision. Working remotely, they write scripts that narrate key visual elements in movies, TV shows, theater, and other media. Their goal is to make visual content accessible by describing actions, settings, facial expressions, and other important details that are not conveyed through dialogue alone. These scripts are often recorded and synchronized with the original content, allowing visually impaired audiences to enjoy a fuller experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Audio Description Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Audio Description Writer, you need excellent language skills, a keen sense of visual interpretation, and a solid grasp of grammar, often supported by a background in writing, media, or accessibility services. Familiarity with audio editing software, script formatting tools, and accessibility guidelines such as the Audio Description Coalition standards is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to convey visual information concisely are vital soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring that visual media is accessible, engaging, and accurately represented for audiences with visual impairments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote audio description writers, and how can they be managed?

Remote audio description writers often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, ensuring accurate and inclusive descriptions for visually impaired audiences, and maintaining clear communication with production teams. Managing these challenges involves developing strong time management skills, staying updated on audio description guidelines, and using collaborative tools to coordinate effectively with editors and directors. Regular feedback sessions and ongoing professional development can also help writers continuously improve the quality and clarity of their work.

Job description

The Role

We are looking to grow our core Applied Science team by adding a "Senior Applied Data Scientist". This is an individual contributor role on a highly collaborative team. The Applied Science team is a self-sufficient, product development team that applies research and experimentation to fulfill its goals of developing and maintaining business-critical software systems. In short, you'll be a full-stack applied data scientist and software developer. 3Play Media has diverse business and technical challenges related to media transcription, captioning, audio description, dubbing, subtitling, and translation. This team makes major contributions in many technical domains, including software engineering, systems engineering, machine learning, natural language processing, generative AI, signal processing, applied probability and statistics, data analysis, and controlled experimentation. You'll be expected to contribute to and learn about several of these domains.

We are looking for a curious, communicative, collaborative, humble, self-sufficient, and flexible data scientist. The ideal candidate is energized by the craft of building efficient, reliable software systems alongside sensible, robust machine learning and AI models. You'll approach engineering and data science as disciplines that are always evolving, and you actively seek out and weigh new approaches rather than settling into the familiar. Above all, you understand that this work is a team sport: you know that strong collaboration, durable relationships, and genuinely diverse perspectives aren't nice-to-haves but the foundation of doing it well.

What You'll Do
  • Contribute to a shared codebase, using GitHub and other modern collaboration tools, such as agentic coding systems
  • Perform the technical elements of a variety of product development and data analysis projects (prototyping, evaluation, productionization, and maintenance), especially related to audio and video processing, generative AI, predictive modeling, and NLP
  • Participate in the internal peer review process, including design reviews, code reviews, and data analysis reviews
  • Design, manage, and analyze controlled experiments within our production systems
  • Regularly report on progress, results, findings, risks, and opportunities
Who You AreMust-haves
  • 2+ years full time working experience in signal processing, data science, or machine learning roles, including predictive modeling, data processing, and data analysis responsibilities
  • Extremely strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong familiarity with Python coding, utilizing industry standard libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, Matplotlib/Seaborn)
  • Interest in presenting technical and business-oriented information to a variety of audiences, including senior management and customers
  • BS/ MS / PhD in Data Science, Engineering, Computer Science or a related field
Nice-to-haves
  • Strong academic and professional experience with audio signal processing, speech synthesis, and computer vision
  • Experience writing, deploying, and maintaining Python and SQL code in a production setting
  • Experience building and maintaining production machine learning systems in a cloud-based platform, such as AWS SageMaker
  • Experience developing and maintaining custom deep learning models using pytorch and HuggingFace, especially models involving text, audio, and video data
  • Experience using third-party generative AI systems, including prompt engineering and fine-tuning
  • Experience in the accessibility and localization industries

Base salary range: $150k - $180k
