Remote Associate Attorney information

What is a remote associate attorney?

Remote associate attorneys are licensed lawyers who work for law firms or legal departments from a location outside of the traditional office, often from home or another remote location. They handle legal research, draft documents, participate in client meetings, and assist senior attorneys with case preparation, all while collaborating virtually. This role leverages technology to communicate with clients and colleagues, making it possible to fulfill legal duties without being physically present at the firm's office.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a remote associate attorney?

To thrive as a Remote Associate Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor degree, bar admission in the relevant jurisdiction, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research tools such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, case management software, and secure document-sharing platforms is essential. Outstanding communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and meeting deadlines. These skills and qualities ensure high-quality legal work, efficient remote practice, and effective client representation in a distributed work environment.

What challenges do remote associate attorneys face, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Associate Attorneys often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration due to the virtual nature of the role. Staying connected with supervising attorneys and colleagues requires proactive communication, regular check-ins, and effective use of collaboration tools. Managing time zones and differing work schedules can also be challenging, so setting clear expectations and utilizing project management platforms can help keep everyone aligned. Additionally, building relationships remotely may require extra effort, such as participating in virtual team meetings and informal chats to foster team cohesion.

Job description

Description
We Are Hiring: Associate Attorney - Family Law
Rockville, MD • Hybrid • Full-Time
We built this firm on a simple conviction: that when people are overwhelmed by the most complex and consequential situations of their lives, they deserve an attorney who can make sense of it - completely, honestly, and in a way that actually helps them move forward.
And it is the foundation of everything we look for in the people who join us.
We are a well-established and steadily growing family law firm in Rockville, Maryland. After 30 years in practice, we are not hiring because we need bodies. We are hiring because we have found a better way to do this work - with depth, with precision, and with people who are genuinely committed to getting it right - and we want to keep building on it.
If you are a litigator who thinks carefully, goes deep, and can be counted on completely - we'd like to talk.
Why Join Us
  • Our Why is real - not a tagline. We exist to make sense of complex situations and help people move forward. Every attorney here does that work with purpose.
  • We go deep. Mastery is how we bring our Why to life - and we invest in the expertise of everyone on this team through mentorship, training, and ongoing development.
  • We deliver Trust. Clients count on us to be accurate, thorough, and completely reliable. So does our team. That standard applies in every direction.
  • Hybrid schedule with genuine flexibility - and we mean it.
  • Clear path to growth, including senior associate and partner track opportunities.
  • A firm culture that is serious about the work and not serious about itself. We find moments of humor, lightness, and real human connection in the middle of difficult cases - because that is part of how we do this well.

What You Will Do
  • Handle a full caseload of family law matters: divorce, custody, child support, protective orders, and more.
  • Represent clients in court - litigation experience is required.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, settlement agreements, and other legal documents with precision and care.
  • Build complete, accurate legal strategies - going deep into the facts of every matter rather than accepting surface-level presentations.
  • Counsel clients clearly and honestly, even when the truth is difficult.
  • Collaborate with a team that takes the work seriously and each other equally.

What We Are Looking For
  • Licensed to practice law in Maryland (DC and/or Virginia a plus).
  • 2+ years of litigation experience in Family Law.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and courtroom skills.
  • The ability to take in complex, emotionally charged situations and make sense of them - for your client, and for yourself.
  • Deep professional instincts: you go further than required, you verify rather than assume, and you are the kind of attorney people can count on completely.
  • Emotionally intelligent, organized, and level-headed under pressure.
  • A sense of humor. Lightness is not optional here - it is part of how we stay human in a serious profession.

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits: health, dental, vision, 401(k), generous PTO, and paid holidays.
  • Hybrid schedule with real remote flexibility.
  • Direct mentorship and ongoing professional development.
  • A team that supports each other and shows up - for clients and for each other.
  • Modern tools and systems that let you do your best work efficiently.

If you are looking for a firm where the work is meaningful, the people are real, and the standard is high - we would love to hear from you.
Responsibilities
• Manage family law cases: divorce, custody, child support, protective orders, and more.
• Draft pleadings, motions, and settlement agreements.
• Represent clients in court.
• Build thorough case strategy grounded in complete legal and factual analysis.
• Counsel clients with clarity and honesty.
• Collaborate with a supportive, experienced team.
Qualifications
• Licensed in Maryland - 2+ years of litigation experience. DC license a plus.
• Family Law background and experience.
• Confident in the courtroom. Precise with the pen. Clear with clients.
• The kind of attorney who goes further than required and can be counted on completely.
• Organized, emotionally intelligent, and level-headed under pressure.
• Bonus: you appreciate both legal precision and a well-timed joke.
