The fine art practice is one of the fastest growing monoline art insurers in North America, underwriting private collections, dealers, galleries, public collections, and museums. We are currently seeking an experienced Underwriter to join our Fine Art team. The role of the Underwriter is tomarket, underwrite and produce profitable monoline Fine Art inland marine coverage on a national basis in accordance with Company objectives and policies. This is a salaried position and not commissioned sales.

This position is based in our New York City office and follows a hybrid work schedule. Depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications, we may also consider individuals located outside the New York City area for a hybrid or fully remote position depending on the precise location.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Has responsibility for low complexity risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability within scope of authority and per divisional objectives.

    • Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.

    • Maintains a high level of customer service.

    • Receives and analyzes submissions and determines terms to offer (policy limits, deductibles, coverage options and conditions, etc.).

    • Prices business in accordance with company guidelines.

    • Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines.

    • Orders and analyzes miscellaneous business reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, including applications, location details, credit checks, contract agreements, financial statements, and underwriting surveys.

    • Makes recommendations on risks.

    • Enters, maintains, and monitors accounts using underwriting, analysis, and desktop systems.

    • Prepares effective internal and external communications on underwriting issues.

  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.

  • Interacts with the producers/insureds, assists in marketing calls, and participates in underwriting/production calls.

    • Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.

    • Visits producers and principals, as well as attends industry or company events, in order to retain existing accounts, survey exposures, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities in support of divisional objectives.

  • Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Strong negotiation skills.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.

  • Field of Study: Applicable liberals arts or business discipline

  • Art Related Experience: Knowledge of contemporary art movements and art history is helpful but not required.

  • Generally, 5 years to 10+ years of related experience.

  • High level of organizational skills, ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency in PC based programs and Microsoft Office.

  • Must be open to day and overnight travel up to 20% of the time to visit producers and insureds and attend industry or company events.
