JOB TITLE: Web Designer & Technical Writer

GOVERNMENT AGENCY: DOJ ATR (Antitrust Division)

POSITION INFORMATION: Full-Time Position; Government contractor supporting DOJ ATR

LOCATION: Fully remote

POSITION TIMING: Position requires DOJ clearance; candidate can start once complete (4-6 weeks)

POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a versatile Web Designer & Technical Writer who combines strong visual design skills with the ability to write, edit, and review technical content. This role will support digital communications by improving clarity, usability, and visual quality across announcements, websites, and other digital assets.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working across design and content, and able to translate complex information into clear, accessible, and engaging materials.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Web Designer Responsibilities:

  • Design, re-design, code, test, implement, and maintain new web pages and sections of agency Internet and intranet websites.
  • Create prototypes (including graphic design, navigation, and layout options) of new web pages and site areas.
  • Collaborate with content providers (including attorneys, economists, senior management, administrative, and IT support staff) and key web team members on project goals, audiences, schedules, and other aspects of project planning and deliverables.
  • Establish layout, design, formatting and style guidelines for websites.
  • Review and track web metrics and analytics.
  • Research, evaluate, and report on new and emerging developments and trends in web design and web services.
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing when presenting ideas and recommendations to a wide range of audiences, including senior management staff.
  • Train end users, web staff, and agency trainers, regarding various aspects of agency web services.
  • Ensure that new web pages and sections comply with:
    • Section 508 and 504 requirements for accessibility.
    • Best practices in usability and information architecture.
    • Federal and agency policies and requirements.
  • Implement, code, and test prototypes using technologies such as HTML, CSS, XHTML, dynamic HTML (JavaScript), ASP, JSP, and PHP in a multi-browser, multi-operating system, and multi-device environment.
  • Comply with best practices for "plain writing" when creating, organizing, and editing content.
  • Support and assist web content administrators, quality assurance analysts when requested.

Technical Writer Responsibilities:

  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing when presenting ideas and recommendations to a wide range of audiences, including technical, non-technical, junior, and senior staff.
  • Prepare and edit technical documentation including: User Manuals, Job Aids, "Help," What's New, FAQs, policies, procedures, guidance, and other technical information (in print and web media) as requested.
  • Prepare other written documentation including: organization charts, flow charts, brochures, newsletters, information sheets, and other documentation (in print and web media) as requested.
  • Comply with best practices for "plain writing" when creating, organizing, and editing content.
  • Support and assist government and contract staff including: web content analysts, web software developers, web quality assurance analysts, managers and other web support staff when requested.
  • Prepare multimedia training and guidance tutorials.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with Section 508 / accessibility compliance
  • Familiarity with web analytics and reporting (e.g., Google Analytics or similar tools)
  • Experience designing for government, enterprise, or regulated environments
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to explain design and content decisions clearly to non-technical audiences
  • Comfort working independently in a fast-paced environment

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to obtain a US DOJ public trust clearance
  • For the purposes of obtaining a federal security clearance, all applicants must be a US Citizen

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position is fully remote. The employee will primarily work in a home office environment and must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
