Remote animation character design involves creating and developing characters for animated projects while working from a location outside of a traditional studio, often from home. Designers use digital tools to sketch, refine, and finalize character concepts based on project requirements and feedback from directors or clients. This role requires strong artistic skills, creativity, and proficiency with animation software. Collaboration is typically done online through video meetings and file-sharing platforms. Remote character designers are essential to animated films, TV shows, games, and commercials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote animation character designer?

To thrive as a Remote Animation Character Designer, you need a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in character anatomy, creativity, and proficiency in drawing or digital illustration, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Toon Boom Harmony, or Blender is typically expected. Exceptional communication, time management, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for collaborating effectively in remote teams and meeting project deadlines. These skills and qualities ensure that designers can create compelling, on-brand characters efficiently while maintaining productive remote workflows.

How do remote animation character designers typically collaborate with other team members during the production process?

Remote animation character designers often collaborate with art directors, animators, and writers using digital tools like Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms. Regular virtual meetings, design reviews, and shared cloud-based workspaces help ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals and feedback. Clear communication and file organization are essential to streamline revisions and maintain consistency across the team. This collaborative workflow allows designers to contribute creatively while remaining flexible in their remote environment.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Graphic Designer based in Netherlands.

This role sits within a monetisation-focused design team, creating high-quality visual assets that support product growth and experimentation. You will produce graphics for paywalls, upsells, promotional campaigns, email marketing, and app store experiences. Working closely with a senior designer and product marketing team, you will build within an established design system and visual language. The position is production-focused, making it an excellent opportunity for a junior designer looking to develop practical experience in growth and monetisation. Your work will contribute directly to A/B testing, customer engagement, and key product performance metrics. You will receive regular feedback from experienced design leadership while working across a diverse range of creative formats. This is a strong opportunity to develop your craft in a global, remote environment that embraces experimentation and AI-powered creative tools.

Accountabilities
  • Create high-quality graphic assets for monetisation funnels, including paywall screens, upsell elements, promotional banners, and related product visuals.
  • Develop and adapt vector illustrations and UI graphics while maintaining consistency with the established visual style and design system.
  • Design banners and visual materials for email marketing campaigns.
  • Prepare screenshots and promotional assets for the App Store and Google Play, including updates, adaptations, and localised versions.
  • Adapt existing creative assets across multiple formats, dimensions, and A/B testing variations.
  • Create Lottie animations for use within monetisation funnels and product experiences.
  • Maintain strong visual consistency, accuracy, and quality across all monetisation-related materials.
  • Collaborate closely with the senior designer and product marketing stakeholders to understand briefs and incorporate feedback.
  • Iterate efficiently on designs while maintaining quality and meeting project deadlines.
  • Keep source files organised and follow established naming, file management, and handoff guidelines.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing visual assets and contribute ideas that enhance the effectiveness of creative materials.
Requirements:
  • Junior-level commercial experience in graphic design, with a portfolio demonstrating graphic design, illustration, marketing visuals, or related work.
  • Formal education in art or design, or completed relevant design courses.
  • Confident daily use of Figma, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Strong ability to independently create and refine vector illustrations.
  • Solid understanding of core design principles, including colour theory, composition, visual hierarchy, and layout.
  • Experience using AI tools to generate or enhance visual assets.
  • Ability to interpret feedback constructively and iterate on designs without compromising quality or missing deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and consistently high standards for visual execution.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with designers, product marketing teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while remaining aligned with team processes and creative direction.
  • Availability to work from within Europe with a schedule overlapping Central European Time by approximately three hours in either direction.
  • Experience with Lottie animations is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Midjourney, Krea, or comparable AI image-generation tools is advantageous.
  • Strong illustration capabilities, proactive thinking, and a willingness to suggest creative or process improvements are highly valued.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote work environment with the flexibility to work globally, subject to the required European/CET working-hour overlap.
  • Innovative environment focused on experimentation, technology, and new approaches within the EdTech space.
  • Company-provided medical expense compensation.
  • Access to AI subscriptions and other creative and productivity tools.
  • Flexible paid time off, including 21 days of annual leave plus 10 bank holidays.
  • Collaborative culture with experienced and passionate professionals.
  • Opportunity to receive regular feedback and mentorship from a senior design lead.
  • Exposure to monetisation, growth, product marketing, A/B testing, and performance-driven design.
  • Opportunity to build experience across product, marketing, app store, illustration, animation, and AI-assisted creative work.
