What does a Remote Android Developer do?

A Remote Android Developer is a software engineer who designs, develops, tests, and maintains applications for devices running the Android operating system, all while working from a remote location outside of a traditional office environment. Their responsibilities include writing clean and efficient code, collaborating with team members via online tools, and troubleshooting bugs. They often work with technologies such as Java, Kotlin, and Android Studio to create user-friendly mobile applications. Communication and time management skills are especially important for remote roles to ensure successful project delivery.

What Does a Remote Android Developer Do?

As a remote Android developer, your job is to work from home and program software for Android systems. In this role, your duties may include working on a software application, evaluating the performance of code on each version of the Android platform, integrating common technologies like Java, and assessing whether or not software functions well on each device. Remote Android developers often produce lifecycle documentation, provide technical planning, ensure code quality, and coordinate with other developers. They commonly use tools like Slack, Jira, and GitHub to coordinate tasks, share progress, and conduct code reviews asynchronously. Regular stand-up meetings are often scheduled to accommodate overlapping work hours, and thorough documentation is essential to keep everyone aligned. Adapting to time zone differences can be a challenge, but it also fosters independence and flexibility in managing one’s workload.

Job description

Hi, weareecobee.

ecobee introduced the world's first smart Wi-Fi thermostat to help millions of consumers save money, conserve energy, and bring home automation into their lives. That was just the beginning. We continue our pursuit to create technology that brings peace of mind into the home and allows people to focus on the moments that matter most. We take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment, all while being part of the exciting, connected home revolution.

In 2021, ecobee became a subsidiary of Generac Power Systems. Generac introduced the first affordable backup generator and later created the category of automatic home standby generator. The company is committed to sustainable, cleaner energy products poised to revolutionize the 21st century electrical grid. Together, we take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment.

Why we love to do whatwe do:

We're helping build the world of tomorrow with solutions that improve everyday life while making a positive impact onthe planet. Ourproducts and serviceswork in harmonytoprovide comfort, efficiency, and peace of mind for millions of homes and businesses. While we're proud of what we've done so far, there's still a lot we can do-and you can be part of it.

Join our extraordinary team.

We're a rapidly growing global tech company headquartered in Canada, in the heart of downtown Toronto, with an office in Leeds, UK, and remote ecopeeps in the US. We get to work with some of North America and UK's leading professionals. Our colleagues are proud to bring their authentic selves to work, confident that what we do is grounded in a greater purpose. We're always looking for curious, talented, and passionate people to join our team.

Who You'll Be Joining

You'll join the Mobile Energy team, which owns everything thermostatrelated on mobile, as well as mobile experiences for Energy Services and grid resiliency. Our work sits at the intersection of connected devices, energy intelligence, and realworld impact - helping customers stay comfortable, save energy, and support a more resilient electrical grid.

The team builds and operates core mobile experiences used by millions of customers, working closely with product, design, backend, data, and firmware partners. We ship frequently, operate at scale, and take pride in highquality, reliable mobile software.

We're looking for a Senior Mobile Engineer who is excited to work across both iOS and Android (natively), and who strongly leverage AIassisted development to move faster, improve quality, and reduce friction in large production codebases.

You'll bring deep expertise in one platform (iOS or Android), with the ability and willingness to contribute meaningfully in the other. This is not a platformsiloed role - flexibility and collaboration are core to how we operate.

Highlights of Our Work

  • Building and evolving mobile experiences that control and monitor smart thermostats and energy programs in real time
  • Shipping features that support energy efficiency, demand response, and grid resiliency
  • Working with connected devices over WiFi, Bluetooth, and cloudbacked APIs
  • Operating production mobile software at scale, with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and user trust
  • Collaborating closely across iOS and Android to deliver consistent, highquality customer experiences

What Makes This Role Different: AIFirst Engineering

AI is an intentional part of how we build mobile software.

In this role, "strong AI expertise" means using modern AI tools (for example, Claude, Copilot or Gemini) and leveraging Agentic AI as a force multiplier in daytoday engineering work

You'll be expected to use AIassisted development to:

  • Accelerate feature development and debugging
  • Improve test coverage and reduce regressions
  • Refactor and simplify complex or legacy code safely
  • Navigate unfamiliar areas of the codebase or secondary platform more efficiently
  • Create clearer documentation and more maintainable patterns

You should know how to validate AI output, apply engineering judgment, and manage risk - using AI as an accelerator, not an autopilot.

This role follows a hybrid schedule, with in-office work required on Wednesdays and Thursdays from our Toronto office to support collaboration, and flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week.

How You'll Make an Impact

You'll help ecobee move fast, innovate, and deliver highquality mobile experiences:

  • Design, build, and operate production mobile features used by millions of customers
  • Own work endtoend - from technical design and implementation through release and iteration
  • Pick up work across iOS and Android as needed to unblock delivery and improve team throughput
  • Contribute to and evolve mobile architecture to support scale, performance, and longterm maintainability
  • Take responsibility for production quality, including monitoring, debugging, and incident response
  • Collaborate closely with product, design, backend, data, and firmware partners
  • Mentor other engineers and help raise the technical bar across the mobile organization
  • Influence technical direction and help shape nextgeneration energy and thermostat experiences
  • Model and share effective AIassisted development practices across the team

We operate in a competitive landscape, and our ability to ship highquality mobile software quickly is core to how we win.

Technologies We Use

iOS

  • Language: Swift
  • UI: SwiftUI
  • Architecture: MVVM, unidirectional data flow
  • Async: Async/Await, Combine
  • DI: EcobeeHoney
  • Testing: XCTests & Swift Testing
  • Build & CI: Fastlane, CircleCI
  • Other: Multipackage apps, feature flags, analytics, accessibility, App Store release pipelines

Android

  • Language: Kotlin
  • UI: Jetpack Compose
  • Architecture: MVVM, unidirectional data flow
  • Async: Coroutines, Flow
  • DI: Dagger
  • Testing: Kotest, Screenshot testing, Compose Preview tests
  • Build & CI: Gradle, GitHub Actions
  • Other: Multimodule apps, feature flags, analytics, accessibility, Play Store release pipelines

Experience with our exact stack is a bonus but strong mobile fundamentals and sound engineering judgment matter most.

What You'll Bring to the Table

You don't need to tick every box, but you should bring strong fundamentals and a bias toward delivery:

  • Seniorlevel experience building and shipping production mobile applications
  • Deep expertise in iOS or Android, with strong proficiency in the other platform
  • Solid understanding of mobile fundamentals: lifecycle, performance, debugging, observability, and tooling
  • Experience working with modern mobile architectures and asynchronous programming
  • Comfort owning features in a large, production codebase
  • Ability to balance speed with quality, maintainability, and user impact
  • Experience mentoring other engineers or leading technical initiatives
  • Comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces and collaborating across disciplines

AIAssisted Development Expectations

  • Handson experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, or similar) in real development workflows
  • Ability to critically assess AI output and validate it with tests, reviews, and incremental rollout
  • Interest in turning AI usage into repeatable team leverage, not just personal productivity

Nice to have

  • Experience with IoT, connected devices, or energyrelated products
  • Experience operating mobile software under realworld constraints (connectivity, device variability, latency)
