Mobile App Developer information

What are some common challenges mobile app developers face when working on cross-platform applications?

Mobile App Developers often encounter challenges when developing cross-platform applications, such as ensuring consistent user experiences across different devices and operating systems. Managing varying hardware capabilities, screen sizes, and OS-specific behaviors can require extra testing and fine-tuning. Additionally, integrating with native features or third-party services may demand creative problem-solving to maintain performance and functionality. Collaboration with designers and QA teams is essential to address these challenges and deliver high-quality apps.

What is a mobile app developer?

Mobile app developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain applications for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. They use programming languages like Java, Swift, or Kotlin to create apps for platforms such as iOS and Android. These developers work closely with designers and other team members to ensure the app is user-friendly, functional, and meets client or business requirements. Their responsibilities also include testing and updating apps to fix bugs and add new features.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile app developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile App Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Kotlin, Swift, or Flutter, supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development environments like Android Studio or Xcode, along with knowledge of APIs and app deployment processes, is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication help developers interpret user needs and collaborate with designers or stakeholders. These competencies ensure the creation of high-quality, user-friendly apps that meet business objectives and industry standards.

Job description

Who We Are
At Roadpost, we've spent years building trust with people who need to stay connected beyond cell coverage, in the world's most remote places. That work led to ZOLEO, our global messaging platform powered by the Iridium satellite network, used by adventurers, remote workers, and enterprise teams operating off-grid. The impact is real. Ask the people whose lives were changed by a ZOLEO rescue alert (read their stories).
Today, we're building the next chapter. ZOLEO is evolving from a hardware-led satellite communicator into a safety and preparedness platform, one that combines intelligent monitoring, automation, and real-time visibility to give people and their Safety Circles confidence when it matters most. We're just getting started, and we want people who want to build it with us.

Why This Role Matters
ZOLEO delivers peace of mind beyond coverage by turning uncertainty into clarity through reliable, mission-critical communication and monitoring.

As Product Manager, Mobile App, you will manage the roadmap and end-to-end user experience for the ZOLEO mobile app which connects Adventurers and Work Teams with the people who depend on them.  You will shape how ZOLEO wins in a rapidly evolving landscape—ensuring the ZOLEO mobile app is intuitive under pressure and trusted when it matters most as a key component of our broader safety platform.

What You’ll Do

  • Drive the Mobile App Product Strategy & Roadmap. Define and execute the end-to-end roadmap for the ZOLEO mobile app—from concept through launch and scale. Identify key product enhancements, align mobile app strategy to market opportunities, and ensure tight integration with ZOLEO cloud services and hardware. Stay informed on competitive offerings, including satellite-enabled smartphones and emerging connectivity providers, to ensure ZOLEO remains differentiated and wins in the market.
  • Drive Customer-Centric Innovation. Develop deep expertise in customer segments (outdoor, enterprise, government) and translate real-world use cases into differentiated mobile app capabilities. Help shape how ZOLEO wins in mission-critical scenarios through purposeful design and superior usability.
  • Advance AI-First Mobile App Capabilities. Identify and integrate emerging technologies—including AI and new interface paradigms—into the mobile app to enhance ease of use and safety outcomes. Leverage AI tools to accelerate product discovery, prototyping, and decision-making while embedding intelligent features into device experiences.
  • Deliver Best-in-Class User Experiences. Drive the mobile app experience and ensure seamless integration with ZOLEO devices and the ZOLEO service platform. Translate strategy into detailed requirements, user stories, and prototypes that clearly define UX, UI, and interaction models for engineering teams.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally to Execute. Partner with engineering, design, and product leaders to assess feasibility, manage dependencies, and deliver predictable launch timelines. Ensure alignment between mobile app capabilities and broader platform features.
  • Enable Go-to-Market Success. Support marketing, sales, and customer support teams with clear positioning, documentation, and training. Act as a subject matter expert on app capabilities and competitive differentiation, owning the triage and resolution of critical app issues in market.
  • Measure Performance & Drive Continuous Improvement. Define and track KPIs across app performance, customer satisfaction, and commercial outcomes. Embed telemetry into app requirements to generate actionable insights, and use data to continuously improve reliability, usability, and value.

What You Bring

  • Product Management & App Development Expertise. 3–5+ years of experience managing consumer or enterprise apps, with a proven ability to drive strategy and execution. A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or equivalent practical experience is expected.
  • Strong Technical & Systems Thinking. Ability to engage deeply with engineering teams across mobile platforms, back-end services, and third-party integrations. Comfortable navigating trade-offs across performance, reliability, usability, and security to ship experiences that hold up under pressure.
  • Customer-First Mindset. Demonstrated ability to work directly with users and customers to uncover needs, validate solutions, and prioritize effectively—especially in complex or high-stakes environments.
  • AI-First Product Approach. Hands-on experience leveraging AI tools to improve product development workflows, accelerate prototyping, and inform decision-making, with an interest in embedding AI into app functionality and user experience.
  • Connected Device / Domain Knowledge. Experience developing integrated mobile app experiences for satellite communications, IoT ecosystems, telematics platforms, or exposure to safety-critical or mission-critical product environments is preferred.

What We Offer

  • Salary Range. $110,000 - $130,000 CAD base salary.
  • Hybrid Work. Candidates located in the Greater Toronto Area will be expected to work in a hybrid model of three days per week in the Toronto office. Candidates based outside the GTA will be expected to travel to the Toronto office periodically.
  • Comprehensive Benefits. Health, dental, and flexible spending accounts tailored to your needs.
  • Time to Recharge. Vacation and sick days to help you rest, recharge, and stay well.
  • Growth Investment. A continuous learning environment backed by a professional development budget.
  • Inclusive by Nature. A values-driven workplace where diverse perspectives are celebrated.
