Roof Penetration Housing, Inc.

Job description

Roof Penetration Housing (RPH) is a dynamic, rapidly expanding leader in the commercial building products industry, trusted by architects, engineers, contractors, and building owners on a wide range of critical projects, from hospitals and data centers to K-12 schools. Our innovative, engineered solutions prevent roof and wall leaks and ensure storm shelters and safe rooms meet code requirements and protect occupants during severe weather events.

We nearly doubled revenue in 2025, and we're still accelerating. We're experiencing rapid expansion across both our New Jersey and Texas locations, and we're growing our powerhouse team as we continue setting new benchmarks for performance, safety, and success in commercial construction.

But what we're most proud of isn't the growth, it's how we grow: deliberately, together, and without cutting corners. If that sounds like your kind of place, we'd like to meet you.

About the Role

RPH is seeking a Technical Writer to develop accurate, clear, and field-ready technical documentation for our commercial building product lines. This position requires more than strong writing skills. The Technical Writer must be able to understand construction products, drawings, assemblies, installation methods, and technical information and translate them into documentation that is both written and highly visual.

The role will produce installation manuals, technical data sheets, CSI specifications, submittals, picture cards, quick-reference guides, and other materials used by architects, engineers, contractors, and installers. The ideal candidate will also help RPH expand technical content into video and other visual training formats where appropriate.

This position reports to the Director of Marketing and offers remote flexibility, with regular onsite presence at RPH's Engineering Hub in Hammonton, New Jersey. Time onsite is essential to partner with engineers, gain hands on product knowledge, observe installation practices, and develop best in class technical documentation. Candidates located in or near southern New Jersey are strongly preferred.

A portfolio is required with your resume. It does not need to be published or polished work. Installation instructions you drafted, a spec you wrote, an SOP, a marked up drawing, or a training document you built for your crew all count.

About You

You are a detail-oriented technical communicator who understands the construction industry and can turn complex engineering and product information into clear, usable documentation. You are comfortable working directly with engineers, asking questions, reviewing drawings, interacting with physical products, and translating technical information into strong written, visual, and instructional content. You care about getting it right and you keep your work organized. You may have come to technical writing from the field, from an engineering or estimating desk, or from a product team. That path is welcome here.

Essential Functions

Produce and maintain technical documentation, with review from Marketing and Engineering including:

  • Installation Manuals
  • Picture Cards and Quick-Reference Guides
  • Product Data Sheets and Technical Data Sheets
  • Support the development of CSI Specifications and Guide Specifications, with growth into full ownership of the documentation set for one or more product lines.
  • Submittal Packages and Cut Sheets
  • Bills of Materials
  • Technical Bulletins and Best Practices Guides
  • Troubleshooting Guides
  • Application Guides and system tie-in diagrams
  • Training materials and technical videos
  • Other product and technical documentation as required

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Translate engineering drawings, shop drawings, product information, and technical discussions into clear instructions, graphics, and visuals.
  • Develop documentation that balances written instruction with photography, illustrations, diagrams, callouts, and other visual communication.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Marketing, Quality, Product Development, Sales, and other internal teams to ensure technical accuracy.
  • Work directly with engineers and physical products to understand installation methods, product interfaces, limitations, and field applications.
  • Support the development of video-based installation and training content.
  • Maintain consistent terminology, formatting, document numbering, revision history, and version control.
  • Support maintaining a structured, organized technical document library and ensure current and superseded documents are properly managed.
  • Flag missing or conflicting technical information and partner with subject matter experts to resolve it.

    Core Requirements

    • Must Have: 3 or more years producing technical documentation, OR 3 or more years in a construction, building products, engineering, or manufacturing role where creating technical documentation was a core part of your job.
      • We weight industry depth over years on a resume. If you have spent time on jobsites, in a fabrication shop, in a spec or estimating department, or on an engineering team, and you can show us documentation you produced, we want to see it.
    • Demonstrated technical writing experience within construction, building products, engineering, manufacturing, or another technically complex environment.
    • Working knowledge of construction terminology, drawings, assemblies, and documentation.
    • Comfort with visual communication and layout tools. Formal design training not required.
    • Experience creating technical manuals, diagrams, illustrations, picture-based instructions, or similar visual documentation.
    • Strong ability to translate complex technical information into clear, structured, field-ready content.
    • Ability to think mechanically and understand how products, components, and building systems interact.
    • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
    • Ability to work directly with engineers, ask good questions, and keep asking until you understand it.
    • Hands on exposure to commercial roofing, waterproofing, building envelope, wall systems, or related building products, from any angle: writing, engineering, estimating, field installation, quality, or product management.
    • Ability to read and interpret architectural, engineering, fabrication, or shop drawings.
    • Ability to travel periodically to RPH's Engineering Hub in Hammonton, New Jersey.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Understands why version control and revision history matter. Exposure to document version control, revision management, and structured document libraries.
    • Familiarity with CSI MasterFormat, CSI specifications, and construction submittal documentation.
    • Understanding of how products interface within roof and wall assemblies and commercial construction sequencing.
    • Basic CAD or Revit literacy.
    • Experience with technical video, instructional video, or visual training content is a plus.

      Details

      • Starting compensation range: $78,000-$98,000 USD per year, based on experience, qualifications, and location.
      • This position offers remote flexibility, with regular onsite presence at RPH's Engineering Hub in Hammonton, New Jersey. Expect roughly two to three days onsite per week during your first several months, tapering as you build product knowledge. Candidates located in or near southern New Jersey are strongly preferred.
      • Typical working hours are 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
      • This position is exempt from overtime as determined by FLSA standards.
      • Travel of up to approximately 15% is expected and may include occasional overnight domestic travel.
