Remote Airlines Engineering information

What is remote airlines engineering?

Remote airlines engineering refers to the practice of managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting airline systems, aircraft, and related technologies from a location away from the physical aircraft or airport. These professionals use digital tools, remote monitoring systems, and communication technologies to ensure the safety, efficiency, and reliability of airline operations. Remote airlines engineers can work on tasks like software updates, system diagnostics, and supporting on-site technicians, all while minimizing the need for in-person intervention. With advancements in technology, this role has become increasingly important for cost savings, operational flexibility, and global airline support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote airlines engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Airlines Engineer, you need a strong background in aerospace engineering, systems troubleshooting, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and industry certifications. Familiarity with aircraft maintenance software, remote diagnostics tools, and safety management systems is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you coordinate effectively with on-site staff and resolve issues efficiently from a distance. These skills and qualifications ensure aircraft safety, regulatory adherence, and minimal operational disruptions in a remote work environment.

What are the common challenges faced by engineers working remotely in the airline industry?

Engineers working remotely in the airline industry often encounter challenges such as coordinating effectively across time zones, maintaining secure access to sensitive systems, and staying updated with rapidly evolving safety regulations. Communication can require extra effort, especially when collaborating with on-site teams or responding to urgent technical issues. However, many companies use advanced collaboration tools and regular virtual meetings to help ensure seamless teamwork and project progress.

Job description

Location: Remote, US (preferably in Mountain Time Zone)
Employment Type:Full-Time

Switchfly is hiring a Director of Engineering. We build the loyalty and travel booking platform behind some of the world's largest airlines and financial institutions. It is a complex, regulated, multi-tenant SaaS environment where the work is real, and the stakes are high. We focus on high-value products that solve clearlyidentifiedproblems, built to keep delivering value over the long term. We want a leader who can see where travel and loyalty are heading as AI-driven discovery, conversational commerce, and new ecosystem modelsto reshapethem, and who can build toward that future while delivering in the present.

We serve market-leading travel and financial clients through one white-label platform: a single productbehind many brands. The leader we want digs into what each client needs, then builds capabilities that serve many clients rather than one-off features for a single account. Strong partnerships across internal teamsandclients will be central to your success. If you want to own outcomes rather than ship tickets, and to work where engineering leadership meets product vision in a company where your decisions visibly matter, this role is for you.

Responsibilities

  • Own the product outcomes for your teams, not just their delivery. You define what success looks like for the parts of the platform you own, set clear OKRs, and hold your teams to business results rather than sprint velocity.
  • Drive AI on two fronts, asa productcapability and as a development practice. You shape the vision for AI-powered platform features, and you partner with our existing advocates to speed up agentic coding adoption, settingthe guardrails, tooling standards, and culture that make it stick inside a PCI Level 1-compliant SDLC.
  • Actively direct the data science team. Stay hands-on rather thandelegating, andsteer the team toward the data and model capabilities that power the AI-native commerce features you own.
  • Act asservantleader to cross-functional agile teams, with responsibility to mentor, manage, and lead your direct reports.
  • Coach Product Owners to grow from backlog managers into outcome-oriented thinkers, pushing them to connect features to business value, client impact, and measurable results.
  • Identify, mentor, and grow senior development leads into development managers, strengthening the management layer beneath you.
  • Work across the business, including Switchfly's executive leadership and our clients, translating strategic intent into engineering scope with clarity andappropriate pushback.
  • Guidethe personal and career development of your people.
  • Ensure teams work together and that each person has a voice.
  • Foster a culture that encourages learning, trust, and bravery.

About you:

  • 5+ years leading software engineering teams in Agile delivery environments, witha track recordof owning outcomes rather than just managingprocess.
  • Hands-on experience driving AI-assisted and agentic development adoption atteamor company scale, including the hard parts: security guardrails, policy definition, cultural resistance, and measuring real productivity impact. You also bring a real point of view on building AI-native product features, not only using AI to write code.
  • A foundation in software development. You have built and shipped production software, and youretainenough technical depth to challenge architectural decisions, weigh engineering tradeoffs, and earn the respect of experienced developers. We are especially interested in leaders whose strength includes the frontend and the customer-facing shopping experience; depth there, rather than a purely backend background, will stand out.
  • Experienceoperatingin a regulated compliance environment such as PCI DSS or SOC 2, where security and process discipline are non-negotiable.
  • You understand how B2B2C businesses create value, where the client, the end user, and the platform's commercial model are three distinct things that all have to win.Consumer-only product instincts, however strong, are not enough here.
  • You are comfortable owning product direction, partnering with Product Owners to shape what gets built and why, not just how fast it ships.
  • You delegate effectively and are detail-oriented whenrequired.
  • You are inquisitive and eager to learn, always looking for betterapproachesand bringing an outside perspective to the team.
  • You bring innovative, action-oriented energy: you move fast, form opinions, and drive change, with the maturity tooperatewithin the realities of a complex, regulated enterprise platform.
  • Your colleagues are inspired to follow your lead.

About the Technology

Loyalty and travel booking are being reshaped by LLM-based discovery, conversational commerce, and new ecosystem partnerships, and the teams you lead sit right at that shift. The role goes beyond delivering the roadmap: we want a credible point of view on where this is heading, and someone to build toward it. Knowing how travel, loyalty, or adjacent commerce ecosystemsactually work,at the level of business model and customer behavior rather than just APIs, will accelerate your impact. We are cloud-native on AWS, with a React and Ember.js frontend that owns the customer-facing shopping experience, a JVM and Python backend, and a Snowflake data warehouse that increasingly powers our data science and AI features, all within a PCI Level 1-compliant SDLC. Deepexpertiseacross all of it is not expected.
