The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting
for a Fish and Game Coordinator located in Nome, Bethel, Kotzebue, Fairbanks, or Anchorage, Alaska!
What you will be doing:
This position will lead wildlife programs for Region V, which includes western and the northwest Arctic areas of Alaska. These areas include Bethel, AK (Game Management Unit 18) up the northwest coast to Utqiagvik, AK (Game Management Unit 26A). This position oversees all wildlife management, research, and administrative duties in Region V. and has a regional staff of 19 professional, technical, and administrative positions located in the Nome regional office and four area offices in Nome, Bethel, Kotzebue, and Utiqiagvik. Program emphasis includes wildlife management and research activities primarily on caribou, moose, musk ox, brown bear, wolves, furbearers, and small game.

The working environment you can expect:
The position is being recruited for in Nome, Bethel, Kotzebue, Fairbanks, and Anchorage, Alaska with final location determined based on available space and the successful applicant's preference. The position will have immediate access to and be in close contact with the Director and other members of the senior leadership team, and other regional and statewide program staff. Travel to area and regional offices throughout Alaska is required.
Note:
  • Frequent travel to area and regional offices, and small communities is required. Travel may be by small plane, boat, or snow machine.
  • Position requires the ability to fly in small planes and helicopters to complete wildlife survey and capture operations.
  • Position will work in close proximity to potentially dangerous game animals.
  • Position will be required to successfully complete wildlife capture and department capture drug use training.
  • Position requires extensive interaction with members of the public, federal agencies, community groups, and advisory committees and councils.

Who we are looking for:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
• Knowledge and experience with Alaska's wildlife and habitats, specifically Arctic species and habitats, and the laws pertaining to them.
• Experience with regulatory boards, policymakers, and developing wildlife regulations and policy.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively on complex issues with diverse groups of varying opinions while building and maintaining effective relationships.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, including experience editing documents, giving public presentations, and explaining controversial wildlife laws, regulations, and policies.
• Experience overseeing the development of budgets and fiscal management.
• Proven ability to effectively manage programs and resources across Alaska, including the supervision, motivation, and mentorship of employees.
• While not required a current certified pilot with Alaska flying experience is beneficial.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
Seven years of professional experience as a fisheries, wildlife, or habitat biologist that includes at least one year as a program manager or technical expert or two years at an advanced professional level. The program manager or technical expert experience is met by service as a Fisheries Biologist 4, Wildlife Biologist 4, or Habitat Biologist 4 and the advanced professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fisheries Biologist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, or Habitat Biologist 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitutions:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
A master's degree in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management will substitute for one year of the required professional experience. There is no substitute for the requirement for specific experience as a program manager or technical expert or at an advanced professional level.
A doctorate in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management will substitute for three years of the required professional experience. There is no substitute for the requirement for specific experience as a program manager or technical expert or at an advanced professional level.
Special Note:
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
