What does a remote accounts payable manager do?

A Remote Accounts Payable Manager oversees the accounts payable department from a remote location, ensuring that company bills and invoices are processed, approved, and paid accurately and on time. They manage a team, develop procedures for efficient payment processing, and maintain compliance with company policies and regulations. This role also involves resolving discrepancies, collaborating with vendors, and producing financial reports, all while working remotely using digital tools and accounting software.

What does a remote accounts payable manager do?

As a remote accounts payable manager, your job is to work from home and use virtual accounting software to manage the funds a company owes to its vendors. In this role, you may keep the company informed about how much it currently owes, monitor process payments to vendors, get approval for the company's significant expenses, and help prepare information and reports for taxes. Accounts payable managers often lead a team of other accountants, help set up accounts for new vendors, and track ongoing expenses like payroll and recurring utility charges. If the company has an unusually large payment coming up, you may alert executives so they can be sure the company has enough liquid funds to finance the payment when the vendor sends the invoice. Remote accounts payable managers sometimes monitor other types of accounts for the company, though you may stick to this role if you work for a large company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote accounts payable manager?

To thrive as a Remote Accounts Payable Manager, you need a solid background in accounting principles, experience in accounts payable processes, and typically a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with accounting software such as SAP, Oracle, or QuickBooks, and proficiency in Excel, are crucial, along with knowledge of relevant compliance regulations. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication abilities help you manage teams and workflows efficiently from a distance. These skills ensure accuracy, timely payments, regulatory compliance, and seamless collaboration in a remote finance environment.

How does a remote accounts payable manager typically ensure effective communication and workflow with an off-site finance team?

As a Remote Accounts Payable Manager, maintaining clear and consistent communication is essential to managing invoice processing, approvals, and vendor relationships. This is usually achieved through regular virtual meetings, shared digital workspaces, and standardized procedures for document submission and review. Most remote teams utilize accounting software and collaboration platforms to track tasks, monitor payment statuses, and resolve discrepancies efficiently. Building a strong rapport with both the finance team and other departments helps ensure smooth operations and timely payments, even when working across different locations or time zones.

Job description

About Canals

Canals builds software for wholesale distributors, helping them operate more efficiently through automation and AI.

Our customers are the companies responsible for moving the materials that power the real economy; electrical supplies, plumbing products, roofing materials, HVAC equipment, and more. Every day, thousands of people rely on Canals to help process orders, manage purchasing, handle accounts payable, and streamline critical business workflows.

We're a profitable, rapidly growing company with a team of roughly 100 people distributed across North and South America. We care deeply about building great products, hiring exceptional people, and creating an environment where talented individuals can do the best work of their careers.

The Role

Industry trade shows have been a key driver of our growth since the beginning — and we’re doubling down. We’re looking for a Field Marketing Manager to take ownership of the operational side of our events and offline marketing efforts.

In this role, you’ll manage logistics, campaigns, and communication around in-person events, ABM gifting, and virtual webinars. You’ll help ensure the team attending each conference is fully supported and able to focus on building relationships and closing deals.

What You’ll Do
  • Manage end-to-end logistics for trade shows: booth setup, swag, dinners, travel, and registration

  • Coordinate pre- and post-event outreach (email, LinkedIn, paid ads, app content, attendee lists)

  • Support presenters with slide content, planning, and logistics for conference talks

  • Maintain an organized conference calendar and help evaluate future opportunities

  • Track and report on event outcomes to improve our ROI over time

  • Support webinars and other virtual events from setup to execution

  • Handle logistics for ABM gifting campaigns (packaging, shipping, tracking)

  • Own vendor and association relationships tied to events and sponsorships

  • Track and manage event budgets

What You'll Bring
  • 2+ years of experience in marketing, event management, or a similar role

  • Highly organized and reliable, with strong project management skills

  • Comfortable juggling competing deadlines and shifting priorities

  • Strong communicator and true team player

  • Self-motivated and proactive — someone who gets things done without needing hand-holding

  • Experience in a startup or fast-paced environment is a plus

Why Join Canals

We've found strong product-market fit and continue to grow quickly, creating opportunities for people who want to have a meaningful impact on the trajectory of a company.

We believe great people build great companies. That's why we invest heavily in hiring, development, and creating an environment where talented individuals can do the best work of their careers.

You'll work alongside ambitious, thoughtful teammates who care deeply about what they do, challenge each other directly, and have a lot of fun along the way.

We value ownership, transparency, and continuous improvement. Good ideas can come from anywhere, and people are trusted to make things happen.

We're remote-first, flexible, and distributed across North and South America, bringing together talented people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
