This role is especially important for online learners or students who need flexible access to advising services.

What does a remote academic advisor do?

A remote academic advisor is a telecommute position at a college or university. In this role, you work from home or another setting outside of an office and advise students on courses they need to complete to earn their degree. You also help with student admissions and work to improve student retention. Your duties may include monitoring students’ degree progress, helping students plan their academic path, and supporting students as they work toward their educational and career goals. Other responsibilities include interpreting institutional procedures, policies, and requirements, as well as assisting with freshman orientation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote academic advisor?

To thrive as a Remote Academic Advisor, you need a strong background in education, counseling, or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's or master’s degree. These skills and tools are vital for supporting student success and retention in virtual learning environments.

How do remote academic advisors effectively support students and maintain engagement despite working virtually?

They schedule regular check-ins, host virtual workshops, and utilize online platforms to monitor student progress and address concerns promptly. While working remotely can present challenges in fostering connection, successful advisors often develop strong organizational skills and proactive communication strategies to ensure students feel supported and engaged. About Johns Hopkins University

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Gilman believed that teaching and research go hand in hand—that success in one depends on success in the other—and that a modern university must do both well. He also believed that sharing our knowledge and discoveries would help make the world a better place. In 145 years, we haven’t strayed from that vision. This is still a destination for excellent, ambitious scholars and a world leader in teaching and research. Distinguished professors mentor students in the arts and music, humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions. Those same faculty members, along with their colleagues at the university’s Applied Physics Laboratory, have made us the nation’s leader in federal research and development funding every year since 1979. That’s a fitting distinction for America’s first research university, a place that has revolutionized higher education in the U.S. and continues to bring knowledge and discoveries to the world.
