The specifics of what's included can vary widely depending on the company, position, and distance of the move. Employers offer relocation packages to make the transition smoother for employees and to attract talent from a wider geographic area.

What is a relocation package?

A relocation package is a set of financial incentives and assistance for a new or existing employee who is being transferred from one office to another location. Many different industries offer jobs with relocation packages, which typically covers moving expenses, furniture storage fees, any travel and transportation costs, and temporary housing if necessary. For example, if you work in a technical field such as software engineering or data science, an employer may pay you to move from one city to another to work as part of a different team. Some other industries that offer relocation packages include sales, engineering, construction, oil and gas extraction, and health care.

A company relocation package for new hires often includes coverage for moving expenses, such as packing and transporting household goods, temporary housing arrangements, travel costs to the new location, and sometimes assistance with finding a new home. Some employers also provide support for spousal job searches, school search assistance for children, and guidance with settling-in services. The specifics can vary widely depending on the company's policies, the level of the position, and the distance of the move, so it's important to clarify what is included before accepting an offer.
