What is a relief manager?

A Relief Manager is a professional who temporarily fills in for a regular manager during their absence, such as during vacations, sick leave, or other periods when a manager is unavailable. Their responsibilities typically include overseeing daily operations, managing staff, handling customer issues, and ensuring that business standards are maintained. Relief Managers are expected to quickly adapt to different environments and maintain continuity of service. They often work in industries like hospitality, retail, and healthcare. Their role is crucial in ensuring that business operations run smoothly even when the primary manager is away.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a relief manager?

To thrive as a Relief Manager, you need strong leadership, organizational skills, and experience in supervising operations, often supported by prior management or relevant industry experience. Familiarity with scheduling software, point-of-sale systems, and industry-specific compliance tools is typically required. Adaptability, problem-solving, and effective interpersonal communication help a Relief Manager quickly integrate into different teams and address challenges. These skills ensure smooth business continuity, maintain operational standards, and foster team productivity in the manager's absence.

How does a relief manager adapt to different workplace cultures and operational procedures across multiple locations?

As a Relief Manager, you’ll frequently transition between different branches or sites, each with its own team dynamics and operational protocols. Success in this role relies on quickly building rapport with staff, understanding location-specific processes, and maintaining consistency in service or production standards. Flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to quickly assess and align with new environments are essential for overcoming these challenges. Relief Managers often gain broad exposure and valuable experience, which can accelerate career progression into higher management roles.

Job description

At Virginia Eagle Distributing, Relief Managers get leadership responsibility with the energy of being out on the road every day. You’ll lead a team of Drivers and Merchandisers, coach them toward their best performance, and when a route needs coverage, you’re the one who steps up and gets it done.

It’s a role built for someone who thrives on variety — developing your team one day, running a route the next. If you’ve got a valid Class A CDL and like wearing more than one hat, you’ll fit right in. VED is one of Virginia’s leading beverage distributors, and our Springfield team is looking for a leader who’s just as comfortable coaching performance as running a route.
What You'll Do
Team Leadership and Personnel Management
  • Manage an assigned team of Drivers and Merchandisers, coordinating daily schedules and ensuring VED and supplier standards are met at every account
  • Continuously coach, lead by example, and train your team to achieve market performance standards
  • Own the full employment cycle for your team — interviewing, hiring, coaching, performance management, and termination — in partnership with the Service Manager and Human Resources
  • Approve PTO requests, review and approve timesheets each payroll cycle, and monitor the appearance and conduct of every employee you supervise
Route Coverage and Relief Driving
  • Serve as a qualified relief driver for open Sales Representative, Driver, and Merchandiser routes, operating a commercial vehicle and clocking in/out per DOT and VED policy when doing so
  • Maintain certification for the route truck classification — bay or bulk — required in your assigned territory
  • Execute deliveries, account work orders, and rotation documentation to the same standard expected of full-time Drivers when covering a route
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
Compliance and Administration
  • Oversee your team's compliance with VED Safety and Maintenance policy and DOT regulations
  • Follow all warehouse, accounting, and checkout/check-in procedures, including bank deposits as necessary
  • Attend all required sales meetings and uphold VED's dress code and safety standards at all times
  • Develop and maintain complete working knowledge of VED and supplier standards, PFP, and incentives applicable to your team's department
What We're Looking For
  • Valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License (Class A), with the ability to operate a commercial vehicle 26,001+ lbs and maintain DOT-qualified status
  • Prior supervisory or team-lead experience in route delivery, merchandising, or beverage distribution preferred
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to shifting coverage needs across Driver, Merchandiser, and Sales Representative routes
  • Ability to lift and carry 15–40 lbs repetitively (occasionally up to 165 lbs) over an 8- to 13-hour day, in varying weather conditions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Basic math proficiency for handling monetary transactions accurately
What We Offer
  • Total compensation package — $72,000–$84,000 total potential New Relief Managers typically start at or near the base salary range minimum. Placement above the minimum is based on directly relevant supervisory or route delivery experience and internal equity.
  • CDL renewal and DOT physical costs covered
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company-paid short-term and long-term disability
  • Company-paid life insurance
  • Safe Harbor 401(k)
  • Paid time off (PTO)
  • Uniforms provided
