How much do reliability project engineer jobs pay per year?

As of May 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for reliability project engineer in the United States is $117,973.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $102,500.00 and $129,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Reliability Project Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reliability Project Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, reliability analysis, and project management, usually supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) tools, statistical analysis software, and reliability modeling systems like FMEA or Weibull analysis is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and driving continuous improvement in industrial operations.

What are some common challenges faced by Reliability Project Engineers when implementing reliability improvement projects?

Reliability Project Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing project timelines with the need for thorough root cause analysis and data collection. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—like maintenance, operations, and engineering—can be complex, especially when aligning priorities and resources. Additionally, gaining buy-in for long-term reliability initiatives, which may require upfront investments but deliver returns over time, can be a hurdle. Developing effective communication skills and a strong understanding of asset management principles can help overcome these challenges and drive successful project outcomes.

What is a Reliability Project Engineer?

A Reliability Project Engineer is a professional responsible for ensuring that equipment, systems, and processes operate reliably and efficiently throughout their lifecycle. They analyze data, identify potential failures, and implement strategies to improve reliability, reduce downtime, and optimize maintenance. This role often involves working with cross-functional teams to plan and execute projects focused on enhancing equipment performance and ensuring safety standards are met.

What is the difference between Reliability Project Engineer vs Reliability Engineer?

AspectReliability Project EngineerReliability Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Six Sigma or Reliability EngineeringBachelor's or higher in Engineering, certifications in Reliability or Maintenance
Work EnvironmentProject sites, manufacturing plants, industrial facilitiesDesign offices, maintenance departments, industrial settings
Industry UsageUsed in project-based roles focusing on reliability improvementsFocuses on ongoing reliability analysis and system optimization

The Reliability Project Engineer primarily manages reliability-focused projects within industrial environments, emphasizing project execution and implementation. In contrast, the Reliability Engineer concentrates on continuous reliability analysis, system maintenance, and long-term performance improvements. Both roles require similar credentials and often work in overlapping settings, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.
