What is a reliability program manager?

A Reliability Program Manager is a professional responsible for developing, implementing, and managing programs that ensure the dependability and optimal performance of systems, equipment, or processes within an organization. They analyze data, identify potential risks, and create strategies to minimize downtime and improve reliability. Their role often involves cross-functional collaboration, continuous improvement initiatives, and adherence to industry standards and best practices. Reliability Program Managers are commonly found in sectors like manufacturing, energy, aerospace, and technology.

How does a reliability program manager typically collaborate with engineering and operations teams to drive improvements?

A Reliability Program Manager works closely with both engineering and operations teams to identify areas where equipment or process reliability can be enhanced. This involves facilitating cross-functional meetings, analyzing failure data, and aligning improvement initiatives with production goals. The manager often acts as a bridge, translating technical findings into actionable plans that operations can implement. Effective communication and the ability to prioritize projects based on impact and resource availability are key to successful collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reliability program manager, and why are they important?

A Reliability Program Manager typically needs a solid background in engineering, reliability analysis, and project management, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE). Familiarity with reliability modeling software, root cause analysis tools, and asset management systems is common in the role. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are crucial for effectively coordinating teams and driving reliability initiatives. These skills are essential to ensure equipment uptime, reduce operational risks, and optimize organizational performance.

What is the difference between Reliability Program Manager vs Maintenance Engineer?

At RTX, the world's largest aerospace and defense company, 185,000 great minds are united by purpose and inspired to make a difference solving the world’s most complex problems. With our three market leading businesses, world-class operations and investments in research and development, we offer capabilities and opportunity no one else can. Together, we push the boundaries of known science and find new ways to connect and protect our world.

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power systems and has been revolutionizing modern flight for over 100 years. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense.

What You Will Do:

We are looking for a Reliability Engineer to mature the asset reliability program for a 1.2 million square foot advanced aerospace manufacturing facility. This role suits a mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering background, or equivalent hands-on experience in facilities maintenance and reliability.

You will refine an existing framework, criticality and PM strategy that is already established, by strengthening the data and metrics that measure program performance, and by serving as the technical point of contact for our Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) provider, coaching their planner and validating asset assessments against real operating history. This work protects production continuity by ensuring building infrastructure never becomes the reason the line stops.

If you are a reliability professional who thrives in a high-growth industrial environment, and understands that the building feeds the machines, we want to hear from you. This role offers a direct line to leadership, a greenfield program to call your own, and the opportunity to establish the reliability foundation for one of the most significant manufacturing expansions in Pratt & Whitney's history.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Criticality-Based Maintenance Strategy: Refine PM task frequencies and failure mode logic within the site's criticality framework. Apply differentiated maintenance logic to N+1 systems, including chillers, pumps, and air handlers.
  • Maintain PM Program Standards: Maintain and improve maintenance work standards, including task scope, frequency, and failure modes, across critical mechanical equipment. Recommend program adjustments to leadership as operating data matures.
  • Track and Report Reliability KPIs: Track core reliability metrics, including preventive to reactive ratio, schedule compliance, mean time between failures, and backlog age. Identify and close data gaps limiting accurate metric reporting.
  • Coordinate with IFM Planning: Serve as technical point of contact for IFM planning and scheduling. Coach the IFM planner on work order quality, job scoping, and parts staging. Validate IFM asset replacement assessments against failure history and criticality.
  • Conduct Root Cause and Failure Analysis: Conduct RCA and FMEA for significant or recurring equipment failures. Translate findings into PM strategy updates.
  • Support Audit Readiness: Maintain maintenance records and failure history in a form that supports regulatory and quality audits, including FAA, ISO, and AS9100 requirements. Apply asset management principles, such as ISO 55000, to keep maintenance decisions traceable.
  • Support Critical Spares Strategy: Identify critical spare parts based on failure modes, lead time, and redundancy. Validate IFM's spares inventory levels against criticality and failure history.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or a related STEM field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial or manufacturing facilities maintenance and reliability OR and Advanced degree with 3+ Years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing a maintenance reliability program from an early or undeveloped state into a fully structured, mature system.
  • Hands-on working knowledge of facilities equipment including HVAC, compressed air systems, and electrical distribution
  • SAP PM module experience including functional location structure, equipment master record configuration, and maintenance task list development
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident)

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) through SMRP
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability manufacturing environments
  • Experience supporting capital equipment commissioning and utility dependency documentation
  • Advanced degree in reliability, maintenance, or systems engineering

Please ensure the role type defined below is appropriate for your needs before applying to this role.

This position is classified as:

Pratt & Whitney has a long history of leadership and innovation in the field of aviation propulsion. Our story begins in the 1920s and has flourished throughout the decades. We have continuously transformed and reinvented our businesses to offer superior products and services to our customers. In 1925, the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company was founded by Frederick B. Rentschler, pioneer of the air-cooled radial engine design which enabled unprecedented power-to-weight ratio. Its first engine, the R-1340 Wasp engine, transformed military and commercial aviation and is still in use today. In 1928, the Canadian division of the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company was established. In 1944, Pratt & Whitney began its gas turbine and jet propulsion initiative. The company constructed a wind tunnel, laboratory and engineering center to support our allies’ efforts in World War II. In 1945, wartime production included more than 300,000 Pratt & Whitney engines, touted by service members as extremely dependable – a legacy that continues today. From there, Pratt & Whitney continued to design and innovate more powerful, agile, and reliable engines becoming a leader in the aerospace industry.
