What is a release manager?

A release manager typically works with software products in the information technology field and oversees all aspects of a product’s release. As a release manager, you play a pivotal role in guiding product management and project teams to move forward in the release management lifecycle. Your job duties include planning the release schedule, ensuring all requirements are met, and identifying issues as they arise. A product release may involve application updates, operating system patches, or security improvements.

How does a release manager typically collaborate with development and operations teams during a release cycle?

A Release Manager acts as a critical bridge between development and operations teams, ensuring smooth planning, coordination, and deployment of software releases. They facilitate communication by organizing release planning meetings, tracking progress, and addressing any blockers that may arise. During the release cycle, Release Managers coordinate testing efforts, manage timelines, and oversee deployment processes to minimize risks and ensure quality. This collaboration helps align all stakeholders, ensuring successful and timely releases in dynamic environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a release manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Release Manager, you need expertise in software development lifecycle management, project coordination, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with CI/CD tools like Jenkins, version control systems such as Git, and ITIL or Agile certifications are commonly required. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills help manage cross-functional teams and coordinate complex software releases. These competencies are crucial for ensuring smooth, timely, and high-quality software deployments in dynamic tech environments.

What is the difference between Release Manager vs Software Developer?

What skills do you need to be a release manager?

A release manager needs strong project management skills, knowledge of software development lifecycle, and proficiency with tools like version control and build automation. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of testing and deployment processes are also essential. Certifications such as PMP or Agile/Scrum can enhance qualifications.

Job description

A Lineage Logistics the ERP Release Manager is a hands on individual contributor project manager responsible for successfully implementing large, complex, global technology projects. The role involves coordinating technical and functional resources across multiple teams and often requires working concurrently on several global projects. We are seeking a detail-oriented Release Manager to support operational governance, SOX-related activities, and smaller technology initiatives within our ERP environment, with an expectation of release management experience in Workday (HR + Finance). This role is primarily client-side and focuses on coordinating recurring control activities, supporting audit readiness, and driving structured execution of small-to-medium initiatives across Finance and HR systems.
The ideal candidate is a strong organizer and communicator who can work across technical and business teams, bring structure to evolving processes, and ensure accountability for timelines, documentation, and compliance-related deliverables. This is not a large-scale implementation role - it is a hands-on coordination and governance role critical to operational stability and audit readiness. Success in this role requires comfort operating in a fast-paced environment where not all processes are fully defined, and a willingness to help bring structure and consistency over time.
At Lineage, the goal is to create a versatile, right-sized, highly skilled team with the proper mix of talents, skills, and experience, with the capacity for and interest in continuous learning to support technologies that can become key organizational differentiators. We leverage cloud services, best-of-breed technologies, and external resources to augment our internal capabilities and provide sufficient delivery capacity. This means that in addition to being a great project manager, an ideal candidate will need to be able to review and collaborate with internal and external resources to ensure that we are collectively able to deliver projects in a timely and cost-effective manner.
As a company, Lineage aims to develop state-of-the-art systems to make our employees productive, meet and exceed our customers' expectations, assist in our growth, and create an operating platform that enables Lineage to achieve its vision of transforming the global food supply chain. This is one of the most critical roles in that journey, and it will require someone who has a true passion for technology project management.
This is a REMOTE role.
We are not sponsoring work authorization for this role.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manage global technical projects (i.e., involving up to 20+ resources) by establishing strong relationships with functional and technical teams and integrating requirement definitions, project planning and resource direction to meet team and corporate objectives

  • Partner with global project sponsors, project teams, other project managers, and product managers to help evaluate technical and business requirements and to identify, develop, and implement approaches and solution alternatives

  • Work closely with third parties, including consulting and technology partners

  • Coordinate and track monthly and quarterly SOX IT controls, including detective and monitoring controls related to ERP and supporting systems

  • Partner with Internal Audit, Finance, HR, and IT teams to ensure timely evidence collection, documentation, and remediation tracking

  • Support audit requests and maintain organized documentation to demonstrate control effectiveness

  • Manage small to mid-sized system enhancements and operational initiatives, ensuring scope, timelines, and stakeholders are aligned

  • Bring structure and follow-through to recurring operational processes that span multiple teams

  • Track and escalate risks, delays, and ownership gaps to leadership in a clear and timely manner

  • Support governance activities such as change tracking, release coordination support, and control-related process improvements

  • Maintain visibility into cross-system dependencies that impact compliance or operational stability

  • Help standardize documentation and repeatable processes across Finance and HR system support activities

Education and Work Experience:
  • University degree or equivalent work experience in software engineering, computer science or finance / business administration

  • 5 to 10 years of IT project management experience working with enterprise application software including Workday HR + Finance

  • Experience managing both small- and large-scale projects

  • Experience supporting SOX IT controls, audit activities, or compliance-related processes is strongly preferred

  • Experience working in client-side/internal PM roles rather than consulting-only environments preferred

  • Experience with Workday (other ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle is a plus)

  • Experience managing smaller concurrent initiatives rather than only large transformations

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Knowledge of the ServiceNow ticketing tool is preferred

  • Knowledge of JIRA is preferred

  • Knowledge of project management best practices and methodologies

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage recurring deadlines (e.g., monthly controls)

  • Comfortable working in environments where processes are still maturing

  • Ability to follow up persistently to ensure tasks are completed

  • Clear written communication skills for audit documentation and stakeholder updates

  • Ability to identify gaps in ownership and help drive accountability

  • Experience coordinating across IT, Finance, and HR stakeholders
