Under the general supervision of the Director of the Respiratory Department, the coordinator of the pulmonary rehabilitation program is responsible for the ongoing implementation, administrative, and clinical activities of the pulmonary rehabilitation program. This includes responsibility for coordinating and supervising the patient care activity of all phases of the pulmonary rehabilitation program, including inpatients, that if performed in our department. Patient activities encompass adults with pulmonary disease (restrictive or obstructive). This position is filled by a pulmonary rehabilitation professional.
These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests.
DESCRIPTION:
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Accountable to the pulmonary rehabilitation medical director, and the director of the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and wellness program.
  • Responsible for providing adequate staffing of the pulmonary rehabilitation department.
  • Assumes total responsibility for the pulmonary rehabilitation department in the absence of the director.
  • Keeps the director informed and up to date of department operations.
  • Performs all duties of a rehabilitative respiratory therapist such as family/patient COPD education. Monitors exercise sessions for inappropriate response to exercise. Responsible for checking for abnormal oximetry responses pre, post, and during exercise. Assesses participants pre, during, and post exercise and makes adjustments in the participants exercise prescription when needed.
  • Recruits, interviews, evaluates and schedules new patients, assists with orientating the patients to all phases of the pulmonary rehabilitation program, and maintains consistent teaching for all pulmonary rehabilitation patients.
  • Responsible for inpatient smoking cessation instruction and other bedside respiratory care when ordered. Administers 6 – minute walk test when ordered.
  • Assists in the employee fitness program, which includes orientating new employees and overseeing new employees during exercise.
  • Administers Nebulizer and aerosol treatments when needed and ordered.
  • Reports patient’s progress/problems to the appropriate physician.
  • Assists with continuous quality improvement completing all necessary audits and provides findings to the manager; monitors pulmonary rehabilitation procedures for compliance with HFAP, state, federal, and other regulatory agency standards and guidelines.
  • Meets with the medical director to review and discuss patient’s progress and to discuss any patient problems.
  • Ensures all policies and procedures are current, updated, evaluated and/or revised by assisting the Manager in an annual inspection. Functions as a liaison with physicians.
  • Maintains knowledge of current advances, techniques, and procedures in pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Acts as a resource person to staff inquiries regarding pulmonary disorders and pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Assists in setting yearly goals and objectives for the pulmonary rehabilitation program; reviews the established program on an ongoing basis making recommended revisions to the manager. Stays up to date regarding federal and state guidelines and requirements, especially Medicare.
  • Provides for patient safety; monitors equipment and notifies the appropriate person of all broken or unsafe equipment. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies. Serves as a role model of cardiovascular health.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:
  • RN, RRT, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Current state licensure or certification required.
  • Two to three years of pulmonary rehabilitation experience preferred. Current CPR certification preferred.
  • ACLS certification preferred.
Skills:
  • Must be able to function in a stressful environment and stay abreast of changing technology and regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of emergency equipment use.
  • Knowledge of basic EKG’s and arrhythmia interpretation.
