Histotechnologist II

A Brief Overview
The Histotechnologist II completes routine Histology to include fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining (H&E and Special Stains) of human tissue for evaluation. This includes a complex histologic technique such as immunohistochemistry. Assisting pathologist and/or pathologists' assistants with frozen sections and FNA procedures; accessioning of pathology specimens; daily documentation of QC; working with computers and LIS program; attention to patient safety goals to include accurate specimen and patient identification and other initiatives as determined by the department and overall completes other duties as assigned.
What you will do
  • Assign correct accession number to specimens logged into Histology
  • Select the correct processing schedule for each processing run. Incorporated appropriate delay programs for weekend and holiday operations.
  • Notify the senior tech of any discrepancies/abnormalities concerning the tissue processors that could be resolved with established protocols.
  • Ensure timely TAT for specimens, and recognize tissue structure accurately to orient tissue appropriately in correct embedding mold.
  • Cut slides with the correct orientation and thickness for the tissue type.
  • Select and sequence the chemical solutions required to perform the H&E stain. Perform appropriate solution preparation and maintenance of these solutions to insure consistent staining results.
  • Set up and monitor any automated slide stainer to insure maximum slide throughput
  • Process non-gyn specimens
  • Recognized acceptable vs. unacceptable staining results for special stains or IHC stains, selecting appropriate controls, and including a control section with each patient case
  • Tech assists pathologist and associated staff with FNA process

Education Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree) Required or
  • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours (180 quarter hours) accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the bachelor's degree) Required

Experience Qualifications
  • A minimum of 1-year histology lab experience. Preferably in a hospital-based setting Preferred

Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated excellence in core value customer skills required
  • Strong PC skills required
  • Strong Analytical skills required
  • EPIC Experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications
  • Histotechnologist - American Society for Clinical Pathology Required or
  • Histotechnician - American Society for Clinical Pathology Required
