Job description
This is not a desk-bound compliance role. We're looking for someone who is comfortable getting into the field, understanding what's happening at individual sites, building relationships with operations teams, and translating complex environmental requirements into practical solutions.
The right person will bring strong multi-site environmental compliance experience and the ability to operate independently in a fast-moving environment. Experience within the waste industry or environmental consulting is highly preferred, although candidates from mining, industrial, manufacturing, or other heavily regulated environments may also translate well.
What You'll Be Responsible For
- Oversee environmental compliance and permitting activities across approximately 40 locations in Michigan and Indiana.
- Partner directly with facility operations and regional leadership to identify compliance risks, communicate requirements, and implement corrective actions.
- Manage solid waste permitting and compliance, including state and local permit requirements and special/non-conforming waste issues.
- Coordinate water and stormwater compliance programs, including sampling, analysis, reporting, SPCC plans, SWPPP requirements, groundwater, drinking water, wastewater permitting, and POTW relationships.
- Support air permitting and compliance, including emissions, odor, methane, and other applicable air-quality requirements.
- Conduct routine site inspections to evaluate compliance with environmental regulations, permit conditions, and internal programs.
- Manage new permits, renewals, modifications, and other permitting activities in partnership with operations, regulatory agencies, laboratories, and third-party consultants.
- Participate in regulatory meetings, public hearings, and community engagement activities when needed.
- Maintain environmental permits, compliance records, reporting requirements, environmental events, and key performance indicators within environmental management systems.
- Manage environmental compliance events, including notices of violation, agency correspondence, follow-up reporting, risk mitigation, and corrective action plans.
- Serve as a key point of contact with regulatory agencies and lead written and verbal communications regarding environmental compliance matters.
- Train and educate operations teams on permit requirements, environmental regulations, internal programs, and compliance expectations.
- Monitor regulatory and policy changes and communicate potential business impacts to leadership.
- Support environmental compliance and permitting activities associated with new acquisitions and site integrations.
- Partner with operations, legal, risk management, leadership, consultants, and other internal stakeholders on environmental projects and regulatory matters.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen environmental programs, processes, best practices, and internal controls.
- Provide technical review and recommendations related to projects, design, construction, compliance, operational risk, and continuous improvement.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Natural Sciences, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Approximately 10+ years of progressive environmental compliance, permitting, or environmental management experience.
- Strong experience supporting a multi-site or multi-facility operation.
- Hands-on experience with solid waste, water/stormwater, permitting, spill prevention/response, and broader environmental regulatory compliance.
- Working knowledge of applicable environmental regulations, which may include RCRA, CERCLA, CWA/NPDES, CAA/Title V, SPCC, NSPS, EPCRA, and UST requirements
- Waste industry or environmental consulting experience is highly preferred
- Experience in mining, industrial operations, manufacturing, or another complex regulated environment may also be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to manage environmental permitting, reporting, inspections, corrective actions, and regulatory deadlines.
- Comfortable interacting directly with regulatory agencies and responding to compliance inquiries or enforcement matters.
- Strong organizational and project-management skills with the ability to manage numerous sites, projects, deadlines, and competing priorities.
- Self-directed and capable of identifying problems, developing solutions, and moving initiatives forward with minimal oversight.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build credibility with field and operations teams.
- Tech savvy and comfortable working with Microsoft Excel, Word, environmental compliance software, and other digital systems.
- Adaptable and able to remain effective when priorities shift or unexpected environmental issues arise.
Travel & Work Environment
- This position requires approximately 60% travel, including both local and overnight travel throughout Michigan and Indiana.
- The role combines office-based work with significant time in the field at operational and industrial facilities. Candidates should be comfortable working outdoors and around active equipment, varying weather conditions, noise, dust, fumes, and other conditions commonly associated with industrial environments.
- Occasional early-morning, after-hours, or on-call support may be required when environmental or operational issues arise.
If you've built your career around environmental compliance but also enjoy being in the field, solving problems, and developing strong relationships with operations, this could be an excellent next step.
