WORK LOCATION: Offsite- Refugee Center 2130 ENTERPRISE ST SE

POSITION PAY RANGE: $18.00
SUMMARY:
This position assists preschool, elementary-age students, and sometimes their parents with basic reading skills. These responsibilities are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the University's mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist preschool and elementary age students with basic reading skills.
  2. Commit to volunteering consistently on a weekly basis, for the duration of at least one full semester
  3. Review activity plans of session to ensure comprehension of activities and materials in advance
  4. Facilitate activities with up to three students per session
  5. Conduct special projects, research and assignments as needed.
  6. Support and engage K-8 students attending the Refugee Education Center by: Engaging fully in all elements of the daily schedule, such as games, snack & discussion, thematic activities, reading time, clean up and reporting. Facilitating thematic activities designed by program staff. Reading diverse, multicultural books with students. Engaging students in additional activities such as puzzles, homework support, projects, creative assignments, or any other appropriate activities to support their learning needs. Willingness and interest in learning about student home languages and cultures
  7. Complete daily reporting immediately after conclusion of each volunteering session
  8. Demonstrate teamwork and integrity with staff, fellow volunteers, students, and their families
  9. Ensure a safe and clean learning environment through assisting with after-program clean up
  10. Attending all required training courses
  11. Report issues of concern to K-12 Programs staff
  12. Provide GREAT customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of our customers.
  13. Demonstrate and promote the University Cultural Values.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours as an undergraduate student or 3 credit hours as a graduate student at Davenport University while meeting the standards of academic progress
  • Must be work study eligible
  • Must be patient and understanding when listening
  • Must be a Michigan Resident or have temporary residency in Michigan
  • Ability to provide constructive criticism
  • Experience working with children not necessary
  • Some leadership or support experience
  • Willingness and ability to pass State and Federal background checks
  • Self-motivation to identify and support students in their educational and social emotional needs
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that transcend diverse audiences; communicating to university customers with positive attitudes toward change, confidentiality, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to communicate to K-12 Programs staff on successes and challenges faced (including what went well and didn't go well with the various activities)
  • Documenting the activities of their assigned level through picture taking and sharing pictures with the K-12 Programs staff
  • Demonstrated motivational and problem solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the University
  • Classroom and Office environment. Prolonged sitting and standing. Use of personal computer and telephone (eye and hand strain).
  • Some travel between locations may be required (own transportation). No regular lifting requirements, occasional lifting up to 15lbs
