What is a refractories?

A refractories job involves working with heat-resistant materials used in furnaces, kilns, reactors, and other high-temperature environments. Professionals in this field design, install, repair, and maintain refractory linings to ensure equipment longevity and efficiency. They may work in industries such as steel, glass, cement, and petrochemicals. The role requires knowledge of materials science, thermal properties, and industrial processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the refractories position, and why are they important?

To thrive in refractories, you need knowledge of refractory materials, installation techniques, and maintenance practices, often supported by a technical diploma or relevant industry experience. Familiarity with specialized tools like refractory brick cutting equipment, rotary kilns, furnaces, and safety certifications such as OSHA training is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety are valuable soft skills in this field. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality installation and maintenance of refractory linings in demanding industrial environments.

What are typical work environments and team structures for professionals working in refractories?

Professionals in refractories often work in heavy industrial settings such as steel mills, foundries, cement plants, or power generation facilities, where high-temperature processes require specialized lining materials. The work is usually performed in teams, collaborating with engineers, maintenance staff, and plant supervisors to install, repair, or inspect refractory linings in furnaces, boilers, or kilns. Depending on the employer and project scope, shifts can vary and may require overtime or on-call hours to handle urgent repairs. Safety is a top priority, so training and adherence to protocols are essential, and there are often opportunities for advancement into supervisory or technical specialist roles with experience.

Job description

Kopp Glass, a Pittsburgh-based manufacturer of high-performance, custom glass products, is seeking to hire a reliable General Laborer to join our team. The General Laborer supports manufacturing processes throughout the facility by performing various labor tasks on an as-needed basis. Assignments may vary from one day to the next and will occasionally include periods of intense physical labor. A track record of reliability and a willingness to perform a variety of manufacturing tasks is critical for this role. Employment Requirements:
To be considered for employment, candidates must:
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment background check, consistent with applicable law.
  • Ability to maintain regular, dependable attendance and reliably report to work as scheduled.
  • Successfully complete a 90-day probationary period upon hire.

Access to our facility (and therefore, employment) is restricted under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents of the United States. Applicants receiving a conditional offer of employment will be required to provide information to determine whether they are subject to these regulations and, if so, to assess their country of chargeability for export control purposes.
