What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High-level positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and a strong track record of project management or technical expertise.

What are some of the typical day-to-day responsibilities for a Refinery Process Engineer?

As a Refinery Process Engineer, your main responsibilities typically include monitoring and optimizing production processes, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. You may also be involved in analyzing process data, implementing improvements, and coordinating with operations, maintenance, and other engineering teams to maintain efficient plant performance. Your day could involve both desk work—such as process modeling and reporting—and fieldwork in the refinery, observing equipment and working closely with plant personnel. This blend of tasks helps ensure the refinery operates safely, efficiently, and at peak capacity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Refinery Process Engineer position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Refinery Process Engineer, a strong background in chemical engineering, process optimization, and safety protocols is essential, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS or CHEMCAD), knowledge of distributed control systems (DCS), and familiarity with industry certifications like Six Sigma or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are highly valued. Problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and teamwork skills help professionals navigate dynamic refinery environments and coordinate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring efficient, safe, and compliant operations within complex refinery processes.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Refinery process engineers typically do not earn $500,000 annually; such high salaries are more common in executive roles or specialized senior positions within the oil and gas industry. Top-level engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications, or leadership responsibilities may approach high six-figure incomes, but salaries of $500,000 are rare for standard process engineering roles.

We're reimagining the minerals supply chain by combining deep industry expertise with advanced software, automation, and data-driven decision-making.
The Role
Mariana Minerals is seeking a highly motivated Process Engineer to support our next-generation minerals processing pilot plant in Houston. You will help design, deploy, and operate first-of-its-kind refining processes for critical minerals. This role is highly hands-on and will play a key role in bridging R&D and plant operations, helping scale technologies from laboratory development through pilot demonstration and ultimately to commercial production. You will work closely with technicians, engineers, and cross-functional teams to ensure processes are robust, safe, and ready for industrial deployment.
What You'll Do
  • Lead equipment and process design from concept through procurement, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and startup
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and improve pilot-scale processing equipment in collaboration with pilot plant technicians
  • Design and execute pilot-scale experiments to evaluate process performance, recovery, throughput, and product quality
  • Develop and maintain key process documentation including PFDs, P&IDs, mass and heat balances, operating procedures, and control narratives
  • Analyze experimental and operational data to identify opportunities for process optimization and scale-up
  • Support development of automated plant monitoring and optimization tools in collaboration with software and machine learning teams
  • Ensure safe operations by supporting EHS, hazard assessments, risk management, and management of change processes
What You'll Bring
  • B.S., M.S., or PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field
