Job Description

We have an opening for a Chemical Process Project Engineer in Charlotte, NC. This position will report to VP Engineering, Metal Technical Processes.ย ย The Chemical Process Project Engineer is responsible for improving manufacturing processes and executing capital projects that enhance safety, quality, capacity, and efficiency. This role combines process engineering expertise with project management responsibilities, supporting operations through process optimization, scale-up, equipment implementation, and plant modernization initiatives.

Chemical Process Project Engineer, you will be responsible to:

  • Evaluate and optimize chemical manufacturing processes to improve throughput, quality, yield, and cost efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Lead process scale-up from laboratory or pilot to commercial manufacturing.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), operating procedures, and process specifications.
  • Analyze production data to identify opportunities for process improvement and waste reduction
  • Support implementation of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Establish operating parameters and process controls for new and existing equipment.
  • Lead capital and improvement projects from concept through commissioning.
  • Develop project scope, budgets, schedules, and technical specifications.
  • Coordinate equipment selection, vendor evaluation, and procurement.
  • Manage contractors and oversee installation, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare technical documentation, risk assessments, and project justifications.
  • Track project performance against cost, timeline, and scope.
  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and R&D to support manufacturing reliability and product performance.
  • Train plant personnel on new equipment and process changes.
  • Participate in safety reviews such as PHA, HAZOP, and MOC processes.
  • Provide technical leadership during troubleshooting and incident investigations.
Qualifications

To perform your job as expected, you will be required to have:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Chemical Engineering or related engineering discipline from 4-year college or university; and 3-10 years related experience and/or training in chemical manufacturing, process engineering, or industrial project engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of chemical processing equipment such as: Mixers and reactors;ย Mills and dispersers;ย Pumps and heat exchangers;ย Filtration systems;ย Thermal Reactions;ย Process Pipe Design using fluid dynamics;ย Heating and Cooling Design using Specific Heat, Thermal Conductivity, product Viscosity,
  • Experience with capital project execution and plant equipment installation.
  • Ability to analyze process data, perform classical experimental design (DOE), including Taguchi orthoganal methods, validate, and implement improvements.
  • Must be available and willing to travel up toย 40% to such locations and with such frequency as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

In addition to these qualifications, we will consider as a plus if you have:

  • Experience in coatings, inks, resins, polymers, specialty chemicals, or similar industries.ย 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or PMP certification is also a plus.
