What does a Chemical Process Project Engineer do?

A Chemical Process Project Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing chemical processes used in manufacturing or production plants. They manage projects from concept through to implementation, ensuring processes are efficient, safe, and cost-effective. Their duties often include process optimization, equipment selection, troubleshooting, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. They also ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations throughout the project lifecycle.

What are some common challenges Chemical Process Project Engineers face during project execution, and how can they be managed?

Chemical Process Project Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new processes with existing plant infrastructure, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Successfully navigating these challenges typically involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, thorough project planning, and proactive risk assessment. Leveraging effective communication and project management tools can help ensure that projects stay on schedule and meet quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chemical Process Project Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chemical Process Project Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical engineering principles, process design, and project management, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), CAD tools, and industry standards or certifications like PMP is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills are essential for effectively coordinating with cross-functional teams and troubleshooting complex processes. These skills and qualifications ensure that projects are executed safely, efficiently, and within regulatory and budgetary constraints.

What is the difference between Chemical Process Project Engineer vs Chemical Process Engineer?

AspectChemical Process Project EngineerChemical Process Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering; some roles may prefer PMP or project management certificationsBachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering; professional engineering license may be preferred
Work EnvironmentProject teams, manufacturing plants, engineering firmsDesign, optimize, and troubleshoot chemical processes in manufacturing or R&D settings
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing companies, engineering consultancies, project-based firmsChemical plants, process industries, R&D labs

The Chemical Process Project Engineer focuses on managing specific projects, coordinating teams, and ensuring project goals are met within deadlines. In contrast, the Chemical Process Engineer primarily designs, analyzes, and improves chemical processes. Both roles require a strong chemical engineering background, but the project engineer emphasizes project management skills.

Description

Process / Project Engineer

Healthy Pet - Manufacturing Facility
Reports To: Head of Engineering
FLSA Status: Exempt

Build It. Improve It. Own It.

Healthy Pet is looking for a technically rigorous Process / Project Engineer to drive manufacturing performance through structured problem solving, data analysis and disciplined project execution. ย This hybrid role integrates real-time process optimization with end-to-end capital project leadership inside a production environment.ย

The Process / Project Engineer will operate on the plant floor, diagnosing process variability, eliminating root causes of performance losses and implementing sustainable corrective actions. ย In parallel they will scope, justify and execute capital initiatives that improve throughput, yield, equipment reliability, safety, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).ย

This position is designed for an engineer who wants measurable operational impact - applying engineering fundamentals, lean methodologies, and project management discipline to systematically elevate plant performance

What You'll Own:

Manufacturing Performance

  • Drive measurable improvements in throughput, yield, OEE, and waste reduction
  • Stabilize and optimize production lines through data-driven root cause analysis
  • Standardize and improve process documentation, controls, and operating parameters
  • Act as the go-to technical resource for production and maintenance teams

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead Lean and Kaizen initiatives that produce measurable business impact
  • Identify and implement scalable solutions - not band-aids
  • Support new product introductions and line expansions with strong technical execution

Capital & Improvement Projects

  • Lead capital and process improvement projects from scope through startup
  • Develop project charters, timelines, budgets, and risk mitigation plans
  • Manage equipment selection, layout design, FAT/SAT, and commissioning
  • Deliver projects on time, on budget, and fully operational

What Sets You Apart

  • You're comfortable on the manufacturing floor - not just in meetings
  • You can diagnose a process issue quickly and drive it to root cause resolution
  • You've led capital projects and know how to hold vendors and timelines accountable
  • You think in terms of KPIs, yield, and measurable results
  • You bring structure to chaos without slowing down progress

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • 4-8+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience balancing process engineering and project leadership
  • Strong understanding of production equipment, process controls, and plant operations
  • Experience leading capital projects in a plant setting
  • Lean / Six Sigma knowledge preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, MS Project

Work Environment

This role requires regular presence on the manufacturing floor. Occasional off-shift or weekend work may be required during project installations and major process changes. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

Why Healthy Pet?

  • High visibility impact
  • Real ownership and autonomy
  • Direct influence on plant performance and growth
  • A leadership team that values execution
  • Best in Class medical/dental/vision/short- and long-term disability/life insurance
  • Voluntary FSA/life insurance/accident insurance
  • Generous 401k matching plan
