Job description

Associate Engineer, Unit ProcessPBF Energy is seeking a Unit Process Engineer to join the Technical Services team at the Toledo Refinery. This role provides process engineering support to ensure the safe, environmentally responsible, reliable, and efficient operation of refinery process units.
Reporting to the Lead Unit Process Engineer, the successful candidate will work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Environmental, and Engineering teams to troubleshoot operational issues, optimize unit performance, support capital projects, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This position is ideal for recent graduates and early-career engineers seeking hands-on refinery experience and technical development within a dynamic operating environment.

Health, Safety, and Environmental Excellence

  • Demonstrate an unwavering commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
  • Support compliance with all refinery health, safety, environmental, and process safety management requirements.
  • Participate in HAZOP studies, incident investigations, risk assessments, and Management of Change (MOC) activities.
  • Ensure process recommendations consider safety, environmental, and operational impacts.
  • Support emissions calculations and environmental compliance activities as required.
  • Participate in unit safety meetings, audits, and process safety initiatives.
  • Understand and monitor unit operating limits and environmental constraints to support safe and compliant operations.

Unit Operations and Process Optimization

  • Monitor daily unit performance through process data, operating trends, laboratory results, and operator logs.
  • Identify performance gaps and develop solutions to improve safety, reliability, throughput, energy efficiency, and profitability.
  • Troubleshoot process issues and provide timely technical support to Operations.
  • Maintain a regular presence in operating units and control rooms to support operators and supervisors.
  • Develop and implement process optimization strategies and best practices.
  • Monitor and improve unit mass balances and process performance indicators.
  • Support unit startups, shutdowns, and operational transitions.
  • Coordinate process testing, sample collection, and data analysis to support troubleshooting and optimization efforts.

Reliability and Asset Performance

  • Monitor key unit performance indicators and identify opportunities to improve reliability and equipment performance.
  • Evaluate catalyst performance and support catalyst replacement planning and recommendations.
  • Verify process instrumentation and process control calculations for accuracy.
  • Support turnaround planning, scope development, and work-list prioritization.
  • Participate in inspections, equipment evaluations, and post-turnaround reviews.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving chronic operational and reliability issues.

Engineering and Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve process performance, eliminate bottlenecks, reduce costs, and enhance refinery profitability.
  • Develop technical recommendations supported by engineering analysis and sound economic justification.
  • Support capital projects through concept development, design reviews, construction, commissioning, startup, and performance testing.
  • Maintain process models, operating documentation, technical files, and engineering records.
  • Support updates to operating procedures, P&IDs, process models, and engineering documentation.
  • Prepare technical reports, performance summaries, and post-event analyses.

Teamwork and Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Environmental, and Project Engineering personnel.
  • Participate in daily business team discussions and unit performance reviews.
  • Provide technical leadership during process troubleshooting and operational upsets.
  • Support knowledge sharing and contribute to the development of less experienced engineers, co-op students, and interns.
  • Engage with corporate technical networks, industry experts, and technology suppliers to support best-practice implementation.

On-Call and Turnaround Support

  • Participate in a rotating process engineer on-call schedule.
  • Provide off-hours technical support during unit upsets, emergencies, startups, shutdowns, and turnarounds as needed.
  • Support turnaround planning and execution activities, including catalyst loading, equipment inspections, startup preparation, and post-turnaround reporting.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering.
  • 0-5 years of relevant petro chemical experience required, with an internship, co-op, or engineering experience preferred.
