Redshift information

What skills and qualifications are needed for a Redshift position?

To thrive in a Redshift-focused role (such as an Amazon Redshift Database Administrator or Redshift Data Engineer), you need strong expertise in cloud data warehousing, SQL, ETL development, and data modeling, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with Amazon Web Services (AWS), specifically Redshift, as well as tools like Python, ETL platforms, and related AWS certifications are highly valuable. Effective communication, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills enable you to translate business needs into scalable data solutions and collaborate with diverse teams. These skills are essential for ensuring data integrity, optimizing performance, and supporting strategic business decisions in a cloud-based data environment.

What is a Redshift?

A Redshift job typically refers to a task or process involving Amazon Redshift, a cloud-based data warehousing service. This can include roles such as database administrators, data engineers, or analysts who work with Redshift to store, process, and analyze large datasets. Common responsibilities involve writing SQL queries, optimizing performance, managing clusters, and integrating Redshift with data pipelines.

What challenges do professionals working with Amazon Redshift face, and how can I prepare for them?

Working with Amazon Redshift often involves optimizing large-scale data pipelines, troubleshooting performance bottlenecks, and ensuring data security in a cloud environment. It can be challenging to balance query speed with cost efficiency, especially as data volumes grow rapidly. Familiarity with Redshift best practices—such as schema design, compression techniques, and query optimization—will help you address these issues effectively. Proactively staying updated on AWS feature releases and participating in team knowledge sharing can also make problem-solving more efficient and collaborative.

Job description

Position Summary...Join Walmart as a Staff, Data Scientist – Supply Chain Workforce Optimization, where your work supports over 295 million global customers each week. As part of the Supply Chain Finance team, you will lead the evolution of the Supply Chain Labor Optimization (SCLO) platform—an enterprise-scale analytics and optimization system that processes millions of records daily to optimize labor allocation across fulfillment and distribution centers. This is a strategic, hands-on technical leadership role offering ownership, autonomy, and cross-functional impact.
About the team:
The Data Science team within Supply Chain Finance builds scalable data and optimization platforms that drive operational efficiency across Walmart’s supply chain network. We partner closely with engineering, operations, and finance stakeholders to deliver enterprise-grade analytics solutions that improve labor planning, workforce optimization, and fulfillment performance. This role plays a critical part in shaping the technical direction and long-term scalability of the SCLO platform. What you'll do...
  • Lead the technical evolution of the SCLO platform, designing scalable data models and analytics infrastructure to support large-scale optimization and high-volume operational data.
  • Develop and maintain microservices (Python/FastAPI and Java/Spring Boot), REST and GraphQL APIs, and optimization engines using modern software engineering best practices.
  • Partner cross-functionally to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions and serve as a subject matter expert on platform architecture and analytics infrastructure.
  • Extend optimization capabilities to new operational domains while ensuring reliability, performance, and production readiness.
  • Drive continuous improvement through emerging technologies, workflow automation, CI/CD enhancements, and production monitoring.

What you'll bring:
  • Strong experience building and maintaining production-grade data pipelines and optimizing complex SQL queries at scale within cloud data warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Python with experience in FastAPI (or similar frameworks), plus familiarity with Java/Spring Boot and microservices-based architectures.
  • Experience designing and supporting REST and GraphQL APIs, including federated/supergraph architectures, within distributed systems environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Cloud Run/Kubernetes, IAM) and workflow orchestration, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring tools.
  • Strong stakeholder communication skills with a customer-obsessed, analytical, and solution-oriented mindset.
