POSITION OBJECTIVE: Provide career positions to Nisqually Tribal Members in support of the Nisqually Indian Tribe. Provide guidance, growth opportunities, and skills to enable the advancement of the Nisqually Tribal Members in developing careers and lifelong work skills.

JOB SUMMARY: This position provides an opportunity for Nisqually Tribal members to gain the skills necessary for the position of Outside Grounds Technician. It is an Apprenticeship under the supervision of the Facilities Department. A hands-on learning experience in landscaping and pruning, irrigation, parking garage maintenance, pond maintenance, snow and ice removal, and pressure washing.
Requirements
Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Nisqually Tribal Member.
  • Willingness to study toward and earn a GED or high school diploma.
  • Ability to learn aspects of the Facilities Department
  • Willingness to learn the methods, materials, and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and trimming various types of trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, and grasses.
  • Ability to learn and understand written work orders, labels, MSDS, and instructions and directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, fertilizers, and similar products used in groundskeeping.
  • Willingness to learn the proper operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Willingness to complete training to operate sweeper, forklift, skid loader, scissor lift, and snorkel lift.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Driver's License and comply with the Nisqually Red Wind Casino's Safe Driver's Policy.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and accept guidance and corrective actions.
  • Ability to learn and use basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work within time constraints and stay on task.
  • Ability to learn communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and use sound judgment.
  • Positive guest service and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to obtain a Class III Gaming License.

Preferred skills and knowledge.
  • A mechanical aptitude.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, squat, and lift up to 50 pounds while working from ladders and man lifts.
  • Ability to stand and move around continuously during the assigned shift.
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms.
  • Manual and finger dexterity for operating a personal computer and routine paperwork.
  • Ability to tolerate a noisy, smoke-filled environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
  • Operate vehicles and powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, snowblowers, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.
  • Shovel snow from walkways, driveways, or parking lots and spread salt in those areas.
  • Care for established landscaping by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walkways, or walls.
  • Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, hedge trimmers, brush trimmers, and axes.
  • Performs maintenance on grounds keeping equipment and tools, and makes minor repairs as needed.
  • Prune or trim trees, shrubs, and hedges using shears, pruners, or chainsaws.
  • Ensures that all outside areas are debris-free, including parking lots, garages, and landscaped areas. Changes trash liners and keeps roadways clear of debris.
  • Maintain or repair tools, equipment, or structures, such as buildings, fences, or benches, using hand or power tools.
  • Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto the grass, shrubs, or trees using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
  • Maintain irrigation systems, pools, and fountains, including winterizing the systems and starting them up in the spring.
  • Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other grounds features.
  • Water lawns, trees, and plants using portable sprinkler systems, hoses, or watering cans.
  • Follow planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers and foliage.
  • Assists with traffic control preparedness for special events, including placing and removing signs, cones, and barricades. Monitors the striping for updates and improvements.
  • Completes regular deliveries and moves for operations, including assisting with deliveries from shipping and receiving.
