Principal Objective

The Thrift Store Manager is responsible for conducting the daily operation of the RDC Thrift Store; communicating and interacting with customers, volunteers, and donors; encouraging, supporting and challenging staff and volunteers; facilitating a safe and healthy work and shopping environment for customers, volunteers and staff; and generating funds to support Raleigh Dream Center programs. The Thrift Store Manager must have a thorough understanding of and genuine belief in the mission and vision of the Raleigh Dream Center, using them as a guide in all decisions and interactions.


Specific Responsibilities

  • Manage all details and tasks to launch a thrift store in Q3 2026.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the thrift store, including on-time opening and closing.
  • Supervises any paid staff in accordance with RDC's policies and applicable laws.
  • Interviewing, Hiring, Training staff/Volunteers (trains employees on all RDC policies and procedures)
  • Planning, assigning and directing work.
  • Providing regular, on-going feedback and timely performance evaluations; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Compliance with established security, sales, personnel and recordkeeping practices and procedures.
  • Ensures that the store has sufficient coverage, covering as needed.
  • Ensures that all employees/volunteers provide excellent customer service by greeting customers and providing assistance with questions regarding store operations, merchandise location and pricing.
  • Responsible for operating within budgeted expense guidelines and achieving net contribution goals.
  • Ensures accuracy of cash receipts and daily bank deposits and reports any discrepancies to the Retail Operations Manager.
  • Ensures that no unauthorized staff members or volunteers handle the cash registers, safe or safe contents.
  • Supervises staff and volunteers in sorting, tagging, pricing, and placing merchandise onto the sales floor.
  • Oversees the layout of merchandise racks and displays; prepares or directs employees and volunteers in preparation of merchandise displays.
  • Responsible for the general upkeep, appearance and necessary maintenance of the store
  • Ensures the safety and security of the facility.
  • Corrects any problems, accidents, unsafe conditions or equipment
  • Creating and ensuring a positive work culture for employees.
  • Demonstrates creative thinking and ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions; shows initiative and makes suggestions to improve the organization's efficiency and productivity; demonstrates a positive attitude to changes, suggestions, and feedback.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the success of RDC Thrift Store and its mission and is able to explain it accurately and with enthusiasm to customers and volunteers.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required, with a bachelor's degree in business or retail management preferred.
  • Prior experience in a thrift, consignment, or nonprofit environment is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to supervise, train, and schedule employees and volunteers.
  • Experience in inventory control, merchandising, cash handling, and bank reconciliation.
  • Experience evaluating and processing incoming donations for quality.
  • Familiarity with POS systems (e.g., Square), Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workplace and basic email/software tools.
  • Ability to work on feet for long periods, lift heavy donations (30-75 lbs), and bend or reach.
  • Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving abilities to manage donor relations and donor-related issues.
  • Availability to work weekends, evenings, and variable hours.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and ability to maintain a clean, organized environment.
