What are Red Cross internships?

Red Cross internships are temporary, structured work experiences offered by the American Red Cross and its international affiliates for students and recent graduates. These internships provide hands-on opportunities in fields such as disaster response, communications, health services, fundraising, and more. Interns gain practical skills, professional development, and insight into humanitarian work, often working alongside experienced staff and volunteers. Programs may be offered during the summer or year-round, and can be located in various offices or completed remotely. Internships are designed to help participants prepare for careers in nonprofit and humanitarian sectors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Red Cross Internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Red Cross Internship, you should have strong organizational skills, a commitment to humanitarian service, and an educational background relevant to the program area (such as public health, communications, or emergency management). Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, digital communication platforms, and sometimes volunteer management systems is often required. Excellent teamwork, adaptability, and communication skills help interns build relationships and work effectively in diverse environments. These skills are crucial for supporting Red Cross initiatives, ensuring efficient project execution, and positively impacting communities in need.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a Red Cross internship?

During a Red Cross internship, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects that support humanitarian efforts, such as assisting with disaster response initiatives, supporting blood donation drives, or helping with community outreach and education. Interns often work closely with experienced staff and volunteers, gaining hands-on experience in program coordination, data management, and communications. The work environment is typically collaborative, and you may have opportunities to contribute to both local and national projects, allowing you to develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of nonprofit operations.
