Job description

Principal Objective of Position:

The Ferrous Material Handler works with Ferrous Operators to safely sort, upgrade, and process material. The position performs manual labor and outdoor work daily and may be required to work with customers, vendors, and contractors.

Essential Functions:

The following reflects managements definition of essential functions for this job but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time due to reasonable accommodation or other reasons.

  • Move and position raw materials and finished components manually or with the help of material moving equipment where needed.
  • Identify and separate metals materials according to grade.
  • Greet and assist customers in a professional, safe, and productive manner.
  • Operate equipment in compliance with company safety policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections and daily inspections sheets.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment including lubricating moving parts, greasing/oiling as needed, and performing minor repairs.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of equipment when needed and communicate with supervisor and/or maintenance team.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Experience working in an outdoor environment, subject to the elements.
  • Experience operating material moving equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift to 50lbs.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to perform all duties while meeting safety protocols.
  • Knowledge of difference between ferrous and non-ferrous material.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers and resolve customer questions or complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Constant awareness of surroundings and the ability to watch out for self and others.
  • Ability to arrive at work on time for all regularly scheduled shifts.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma and equivalent combination of experience and education preferred.

Work Environment:

This position is in an outdoor environment and will be subject to all types of weather conditions. When operating equipment, the position operates in a controlled environment, however when equipment needs repairs or maintenance, exposure to weather elements exist. Overtime and weekend work will be required at times. Once trained, this position normally works with at least one other individual.
